So I'd like to purchase a really good safe when I get back to the states. I'm not much into rifles..but I'd like something pretty hardcore for protecting my computer..documents and of course handguns and watches when I go on vacation or TDY. I like the GSA type heavy duty safes I see that we use in the military..they stand about 3-4' tall and would be perfect for my desires.

Can anyone make a recommendation on a good HD vault for <3k that is around these dimensions?

We have a couple of real safe experts here on THR that should be able to help.

The majority of folks will respond with gun safe recommendations. Most "gun safes" are actually residential security containers (RSC) and not safes. They are a different category of equipment even though they look like a "safe".

Considering you're seeing what you like in your work you may want to note the manufacturers and purchase on as government surplus.

Alternately, you may be able to purchase a vault door and have a fire resistant vault room built into your home for about the price you've suggested.

Send a PM to member "a1abdj", he is a dealer and has been very helpful to me as I have been searching for a gun safe. AMSEC makes a few TL-15/30 safes I believe.

I agree most "gun safes" are not going to be what you are looking for.

Your best bet may be to try and find a used commercial grade safe.

Glad to see I am not by myself in Iraq!! You also need to consider what size you need, then double it!! My wife was at the safe store, I showed her the one I wanted. She looked around and pointed to another one and told salesman, "that one should fit all of his toys". 72 tall 54 wide 30 deep. It's a honker, but at 51 I am able to accumulate.
