I was messin' with prairie dogs this last Memorial Day with my .243. I had no trouble to some 300 yards with the 2x7 Leupold. A year before, I'd used my .223 with a Leupold Vari-X II 3x9. Again, 300; no trouble at all. I took a couple to 400 yards with my Swift with a 3x9 Leupold.

What are you shooting? What sort of distances are you trying?

If you're regularly going beyond 300 to 400, probably a 4.5x14 oughta do.

I have a 6x18 Nikon Buckmaster on a CZ-204...I wish I had sprung for better glass in a lower magnification. Even at 6 power it gets a little difficult to pick out targets closer than 50-75 yards and in. It is great for paper, though.

prairie dogs are a passion of mine... to stay under $500 and do what you want calls for a leupold vx-2 6-18. invest in some turrets down the line (not the stoney point ones, either - real turrets that actually work), or have a custome reticle installed down the line and you will find complete prairie dog happiness in your glass.

+1 for the Bushnell Elite 4200 (4-16x AO). Outstanding, and $300 if you shop around.
