Got a New Gun today....

As some of you know my Wife is over in Afgainistain with the US Army.

Well she called a few days ago telling me to watch for the mail that there was something coming that I would have to sign for.

Then today the Mail man rang the door bell and asked to see some ID and then asked me to come out to his truck and sign for a package....OK ????

All I could see was it is a long package....Then before I saw the shipping lable he asked "You into Guns"....I said "Hell Yea!".
Well he stayed around to see me open it....I liked it and wants to go shotting sometime (Not this Gun but others He and I have)

Anyways what it is is a Snider Enfield 1857....

Now I know nothing about them so if anyone can help I'm listening ;)

i know nothing about that gun either, but holy crap does that look a thousand times cooler then any "tactical" gun out there.
 
Go to www.gunboards.com. Look for the "Martini Henry" forum there. Post your pics there and someone will help you. The Snider was right before the M-H and the M-H collectors there are also pretty up on the Snider.
 
I recently read an article in a sof mag , I think, that said a bunch of the tribesmen still carry around the old british empire weapons. Almost like the old british wear a crest on their jackets. Symbols of wealth, status, seniority, etc. Also a lot are sold quite a bit in the markets in Afghan and Pakistan, and in northern areas of india, iran , and iraq. Some have been well preserved by metalworkers in those countries, and even have a lot of home made parts in them. Watch out for those, and don't fire! Some have lots of wear and are all origional, some, have been held and kept in great shape for a long time.
I think the mag even showed a cache of some really old stuff, that was in perfect shape, buried in a underground cave, for who knows how many years.
if she got it from a Tribesman, then that is big Karma for her, she must have done something right, and of course, good for you as well.
 
Yea thats in really really good shape.
These guns go for about 2000$USD around, at least thats what I saw mine quoted for (1868 snyder enield).

Gun is pretty neat. Wikipedia has a nice bit of info on that guy, cartridges that it fire are .577 snyder paper wrapped center fire. Black powder cartridge, I have found only one site that sells moder reloads for it. Guy uses 24gauge brass shells to make them.

Yours is 11 years younger than mine, probably one of the first that they redid for cartridge conversion.
There should be stamps all over every part indicating nothing was change. Should be a stamp on the buttplate, to even the brass rings that go up the rifle itself.
