Been eyeing this sweet 4" model 10 for months at the LGS. Price started out at 750, which is way too high and slowly went down to 500 bucks. I couldn't help it anymore and had to bring it home. 541 out the door for a nice tapered barrel model 10. Now my 6" won't be lonely anymore...

Here it is with its 6" brother

The blueing is great with one small blemish on it, a reasonable turn line, and the grips are in good shape. I will probably swap grips to something in exotic hardwood, but for now it is just fine. Gotta cast up some more wadcutters and load em up. I see many happy range days in the future!

Which dash? Looks nice. Have you got it’s age figured out yet?

I’m not big on tapered barrels but those are both nice examples.

Dash 5, not sure on date yet. It's pretty close number wise to my 6 incher.

The Model 10, loaded with a wadcutter, will solve most problems.

Pretty much the twin of this Model 10-5. Yes, I much prefer a tapered barrel to a bull barrel. This one shipped around 1964 or so. I have always assumed the number 54 on the frame was a police armorer's rack number. Best deal I ever got on a Smith, $125 out the door. Of course that was probably close to 20 years ago.

I also prefer the tapered barrels. This 4" points an awful lot like a 2" heavy barrel. I fell in love with the model 10 when I first picked up my 6" and tries the trigger. Reminded me of my long lost model 29, only lighter. But the barrel makes holster carry on a belt tedious. Wanted a 3"(who doesn't) but when I picked up this 4"er it spoke to me.

It is amazing how a 4 inch tapered barrel M10 feels in the hand. I love my heavy barrel 10 and 64 but the tapered model is just perfectly balanced and perfect weight. 20210130_232924.jpg

That was a nice buy, I would’ve brought it home to meet the other K frames as well .

I’m a big fan of the heavy barrel model 10 versions. Maybe it’s the ramped front sight vs. the half-moon, to me the sight picture is a touch better and the couple of extra ounces out front makes one balance nicely in my hand. :)

    My pencil barrel is a pre-Model 10 M&P…

And my heavy barrel is a Model 64…

    Stay safe.

Those are both sweet little revolvers Riomouse911! That 64 is just like one my buddy who works at the LGS has. If he ever sells it I am first in line...

@adcoch1 I’m glad you were able to buy that model 10. I have a 10-7. At first I didn’t think I would like the pencil barrel, I really do like the way it balances, like @ontarget mentioned.

I really like that 6” model.
Someday I will encounter one and it will be mine. There are a couple revolvers that I will buy immediately if they are in good shape and a 6” model 10 like yours is on that list. I will probably have to wait until I leave this state next summer as 6” model 10’s in CA aren’t something I have come across for sale. I found one on Armslist last year but the guy selling it just wouldn’t respond to my messages so I gave up.

I picked up a Model 10 with a 6" barrel but it didn't really balance all that well for me so I went to a gun show and traded it straight up for this M&P in .38 Special. The tapered 4" barrel just has a better feel to it for me.

When my FIL passed away I was given his service revolver, a S&W model #10, 4 inch pencil barrel, like new that he used when he was a security guard.
I took it to the range where I worked and fired it off a rest at 50 ft. but I couldn't see any bullet holes in the standard NRA 50 ft. target.
But when I retrieved it I discovered they were all in the black bullseye.
Yes, it's a keeper for sure and I still have it.

The 4” tapered barrel makes for a easy carrying revolver. I have a Bianchi #3 “pistol pocket”, an IWB holster made of nice leather formed for the K-frame. Makes carrying my pre-Model 10 easy.
I can see why people prefer the heavy barrel. But I stumbled into my taper barrel pre-Model 10 for a deal price a few years ago, and find it shoots great.
