GP100 in 45 colt

Just to chime in. I have enjoyed reading this discussion over the past few days.
Also, I think the ideal of a 5 shot 45 Colt would be interesting just as is the 44 Special.
Unfortunately, my funds at this time are not sufficient to enjoy either.
One day maybe we will see such a beastie...

Easy, easy. It's the Holiday Season. But I don't see how me wanting a 10mm GP100 with moon clips would be satiated with a 7-shot .357 GP100 that does not take moon clips.
I think it was mentioned way up thread but Clements does a 10mm conversion on the GP100. Not cheap but if you want to scratch that itch you probably could.

It's cool. I see your point; a 10mm GP100 ought to be possible. Stay tuned and maybe they'll make one - with what, about a 5" barrel?

If you think the 10mm conversion is "not cheap", you're in for some real sticker shock with a full custom five-shot conversion.

I wonder if buying that Super Redhawk in 10mm and sending it out for a barrel and weight reduction may be a better course.

Do doubt. Though within this context you are roughly doubling the cost of the GP100 to go from 357 to 10mm. Assuming you're starting with a new GP100 and depending on he exact model you start with and what optional work you have done with the conversion. Though you can probably still buy the new GP100 and do the conversion cheaper than what old-stock NIB S&W 610's are going for.

That is an interesting idea, there is so much extra meat in a SRH with only little 10mm chambers/bore cut in it. How much weight do you think can be removed? Machine the SRH cylinder down with a profile like 22LR cylinder of an LCR? Slab side the barrel? Can anything interesting be done with that hefty frame to reduce weight?

I remember seeing pics of a super Redhawk that had the scope mounts milled off and a bit taken off the underlug, I’d bob the barrel to 5” (so I could still deer hunt) and if it lost at least 8 oz I’d consider it a win.

I have Bowen's first "GP .44", a 4-incher built on the Super Red frame, it's my gun shown on his website.
I have a Bowen Red, too.
I'd say the nod goes to the Super, but the custom Red is no slouch.

Super looking Super Red! Great complimentary contours with the overall design being extremely pleasing to the eye.

Very well done by Bowen Classic Arms, as are all of their fine revolvers!

Kinda like it myself. :)
It's gotten exposed to some trail dust over the years.

Hamilton Bowen builds guns on Super Redhawks with the "snout" cut completely off. Looks like a big GP. He says it is a superior action to the single spring original Redhawk.
Not just the action that makes the shaved down Super a better choice, the grip frame is much more accommodating to grip options. If you have the money making it well worth the added investment.

I agree these both fine revolvers, and even though larger than the GP, being capable of any 45 Colt load up to Ruger only, and with a five shot conversion on either, at about the same cost the GP-100 would cost if you could find someone to touch the job, they are strong enough to handle loads even above the Ruger Only loads!

This let's you have a gun you can use, and don't have to worry about WHEN FATIGUE will require it to be put aside or need reworked, like the GP-100 would with any load, at some point.

Ive been following this thread. The discussion has neen interesting, informative, and entertaining. Ive heard the Judge mentioned several times as a metric for feasibility. But didnt Taurus also make a snub 45 colt for a short time. I think it was the model 450. What size frame was that gun?

Taurus made a snub .45 Colt and a Tracker in the same caliber. It was built on their medium frame which is offered in .44 mag and 7 shot .357mag.

Just to add some more info to the thread I got my hands on a Taurus Judge (Ultra-lite aluminum alloy frame, 4-inch barrel a bit over 10 years old) along with a pair of calipers. Ruger fans may want to skip this post as the numbers may make you very nervous.

Cylinder OD: 1.515
Chamber Diameters: .483 (technically under spec Min: .4862)
Wall thickness between chambers: .074
Wall thickness between chamber and OD of cylinder: .043*
Calculated bolt hole circle for chambers: .947
Barrel Shank: .535

*the scary part is one chamber was .039 and the two chambers on the opposite side of the cylinder was .046. Not sure if the chamber center location was off the bolt hole circle or if the bolt circle was off center of the cylinder OD, or a little of both. Would need more time with the gun and better measurement equipment then calipers to determine. The .043 was the average of the five wall measurements. The other measurements were more uniform, even the cylinder throat to OD at the barrel end of the cylinder was more uniform.

Ive never handled either of the Taurus models mentioned above. Im guessing they are comparable in size to the Gp100?

here are two photos of my Taurus 450, which fits in my model 10 holster.

I see the Taurus offering of a 5 shot 45 Colt on a frame no bigger than needed as directly relevant to both the flow of the dialogue as well as the OP.
