GP100 or Glock 17?

I am possibly trading a Sig P226 for either a NIB 3" GP100 or NIB Glock 17. The P226 is an outstanding gun, but I shoot my Glock and my 4" GP better, and I personally prefer these two types of handguns.

This is a tough decision, and was curious as to how other folks think. So, do you get the Glock 17(Gen. 3) to go with the Glock 23 (Lone wolf conversion barrel makes it 9mm), or do you get the 3" GP100 to go with the 4" GP, and the SW 642?

Leaning toward the Glock 17 because I would not have a full sized auto, and it would compliment the compact Glock I already have.

In the end, I may not trade at all. The opportunity arose, and I am thinking aloud to you. Trade? If so, what would you trade for? No trade? Just curious what YOU would do

well, if you had neither, I'd lean toward the GP. But the difference between a 3" and a 4" is so minimal........

I don't believe in selling or trading anything. Save for what you want, then hold on to it. I hear too many stories of seller's remorse.

The GP is too big for a 3" barrel IMHO. If you are going to go that short you might want to think about a SP101.

If you did trade I would go for the glock 17.

I'd get the G17, since you really don't have a full size auto (other than the 226).

I'm biased about GP-100's and feel that they are about perfect with a 4" barrel, and you have one. I'd rather have a SP101 in 3" than a GP in 3"; as already stated, the GP seems too big.

Get the Glock. If you're not happy with it, trade it or sell it, but I'll bet you'll be glad you did.

I have a GP100 and love it. But based on the ammo shortage I would buy the Glock 17. You already know they are a good semi-auto and the G17 gives you a full size gun which I like myself. A GP100 3 inch is still a heavy gun to carry and I agree with one of the posters you would be better off with a Ruger SP101 if you want a short barrel revolver.

There is such a minimal difference between a 4" and a 3" GP100, and the 4" is the one to have, IMO. If you really want another Ruger, get the SP101.

Now, there is a huge difference between a P226 and a G17. I'd trade that Sig for the Glock in about a half a second. I'd trade for a G17RTF or a G34 even faster, if you can make it happen.

I have both a GP100 and a G17 and I can't think of a correct answer. What about an SP101? That's in between a GP100 and 642. There is a niche you can fill, concealable magnum.

That picture always cracks me up. It always makes me think of Dane Cook's comedy skit on the Kool Aid man knocking a hole in his parents wall. If you haven't seen it, you should! But, no, I did not drink the Glock kool aid. It is a workable platform for me, and one that I have a preference for over the Berretta, Sig, CZ, Ruger P series, HK, and various other autos that I have handled and fired. Probably because that is the pistol that I cut my teeth on.

Thanks for all the replies!(and the funny kool aid cartoon!) It has really given me something to think on. It will be a few days till I can actually make it back to the guys gun shop, so I still have a little time to think on it, but at this point I am about certain that I am going with the G17.

If I had to, now, choose one handgun, to bet my family's lives on, the G17 wins, and I have a GP100! If you don't have one, you need one.

The Glock 17 is the best fighting handgun I've ever fired, 17+1 capacity is an amazing thing.

GP100s are good work horses, but the Glock is a work horse too. Both guns are ugly as sin, both have crappy triggers. Get the one with 3 times the capacity of the other that can't ever rust.

I'd stay away from any after market conversion because it'll question the reliability.

Probably the G17 since you don't have an auto in that category but I'd stay away from the Gen 4. Sounds like Glock's attempts to fix the G22 have backfired with the 9mm models (while not doing much to solve the G22's habit of gagging as soon as you mount a light).

To answer your question I would have to say that while the Sig certainly feels great in my hand, I do not shoot it nearly as accurate, nor as fast as I do with the Glock. Not taking anything from the Sig, I just don't do as well nor gravitate towards it like I do Glocks or my GP100 revolver. It is a personal prefence thing for me more than a Glock is better than Sig or vice versa. If that makes sense.

Get the Glock!

No question. And I love 4" .357s (have a Model 19 S&W), but if I had to count on only one, it would be the Glock 17. Mine is reliable, easy to shoot, lightweight and holds A LOT of rounds. It's also relatively compact for something that can hold 18 rounds of ammunition in one gulp.

Nothing against the Sig, but they do not work for me. I shoot a high-thumbs grip and the slide stop is under my thumb. It's fine while loaded, but it doesn't lock back when empty. (I know, I could train it out, but it works fine on 1911s and Glocks, and I don't own any Sigs personally, so....)

If you're lookin' for another nine, check out the Springfield xdm. I actually think (shudder) it may be more accurate than my p226
