grease or oil for a remington 1100?

DON'T use either on the mag tube where the piston seals glide. I use a tiny dab of grease on the slot of the bolt and use a tiny dab of oil where the manual says on the top of the barrel where it meets the receiver.

Don't use wd-40 on the mag tube unless you like your 1100 to operate in slow motion.(IF at all) Rem oil is good stuff, but I think anything aerosol may gum up the works. I just use liquid Rem oil or even 3 n 1.

Repeat, 47 years with about 20 being with WD-40 on the mag tube, and no malfunctions down to minus 11 degrees F. I am not recommending WD-40 because it is not the greatest lubricant, but it is a great protectant. And it cleans the gas parts including the tube quite well. Note - I said wipe off the excess. Don't spray any light petroleum product and let it sit because it will thicken.
And WD-40 is a solvent for itself, so that eliminates the "build up" theory.

The o-rings are a touch sensitive to petroleum products

This is true. I bought my 1100 in 1978, and discovered in 2007 that the O rings were about worn out. I recommend changing the O rings every 29 years.

in the aviation industry we used silicone based grease for neoprene o rings. Some petroleum based lubes will slowly deteriorate neoprene products. Almost all o rings are made from neoprene, There are o rings made of *nitril which is solvent resistant but I don't think your gun has these. Fishing-reel grease is usually silicone based, water resistant, and very high quality.. 3-in-1 oil is very similar to rem-oil and BOTH were called "sewing machine oil" years ago. They are thin viscosity, highly refined petroleum products

Loved your post Balrog. I bought 2 "O" rings, guess I am good for 58 years or so. The Remington 1100 are great guns and a pleasure to shoot.

I like to see posts with a sense of humor and not so defensive as so many seem to be.

And after lubricating the mag tube with oil, I was going through an O-ring a month. Stopped doing it, and VOILA!, same o-ring still going strong after several years. :D

Some folks like to run semis "wet" - on an 1100, that is not the case
