Green Mountain replacement barrels

I need to replace the barrel on an old TC Hawken that I put together back around 1979.

Green Mountain lists the barrel I need, but it has been out of stock for a long time... anyone have any clue if GM is going to continue making these replacement barrels?

Can I get one from somewhere else?

I put a lot of effort into the woodworking on the stock, so I really would prefer to replace the barrel and start shooting it again - it was custom fit for me.

Any ideas?

Ebay usually has a fair number of Hawken barrels up for auction.
Seen GM barrels up too.
Have you looked/called all the internet ML shops?

I'm not sure but my memory seems to tell me that Green Mtn. quit making guns/barrels a couple of years ago. Too bad if they did.

well I just went back and checked with Track of the Wolf and all of a sudden they do have one in stock!!

However, it is the fast twist version 1:28 - I have not used one of these, and previously shot round balls in the 1:70 original version.

Can I shoot round balls in the 1:28 for targets at 50-100 yards with good results?

For perhaps less money, you could have the original barrel rebored to 54.

Call Robert Hoyt in Fairfield PA and see what he would charge. You might be surprised.

well, the frustrating part of this situation is that a buddy of mine used the rifle for several years and allowed the nipple channel area to get corroded to the point where I am not comfortable using it any more.

He screwed it up, even though he is a gun enthusiast - I ended up getting a shotgun out of the deal, so at least he squared things up between us.

As long as you have the right breech, almost any barrel that is well constructed is going to work. As long as you have the right breech/tang arrangement if you convert, it will work. I have a number of green mountain barrels on old stocks around here with L&R and other "found" locks to make some of my shooters...

Zimmerstutzen is giving you good counsel here. There will probably be less aggravation for you should you choose to have the barrel rebored to a larger caliber, or even bored out and relined in the original caliber.

I think I will see if I can get the breech plug off and look more closely at the damage. Might not be as bad as I thought.

I have seen reference to Robert Hoyt, and it sounds like a great idea - if the barrel itself needs fixing, then it would be great to salvage it.

I just got a notice from Track of the Wolf that they got in a bunch of new barrels from Green Mountain.
You might wanna give them a call & see if they got any replacement barrels.
