A vender of mine set up a greet and shoot last night. Essentially this was a bunch of guys he knew from local businesses who all got together at a local pistol range. Everybody brought a selection and we traded them around.

I got to shoot all of the following:
S&W Airweight 38
Glock 19 and 26
Springfield XD40 and XDm9
Ruger SR9c
Beretta 92Fs
S&W M&P15-22

I used to own a 19 so I was familiar with that one. I’d shot a 92Fs once many years ago in Basic but it’d been so long it was basically new again. Everything else was new to me.

Sadly, there were no 1911’s. I’ve never shot one and would love to try one out. I’m theoretically in the market but have no experience with one and don’t want to just buy one blind.

My thoughts on the matter:
I was surprised but my favorite was the Airweight. I’d want one with a bit more heft to it but otherwise I enjoyed shooting it the most. I don’t have much experience with revolvers and didn’t expect to like it.

The SR9c’s trigger was very light and took some getting used to. Of course, I’ve been trying to master my Bodyguard 380’s trigger which in comparison is extremely heavy and long.

The XD40’s mag pinched my finger with every shot. My pinky landed exactly at the seam between the mag and the bottom of the grip. The owner said it did the same thing to him; he was just used to it. I wasn’t very quick with follow up shots with it. Also, that’s a very large handgun.

My own handguns suck, with the exception of my Buckmark, which is awesome. I have a Bersa 380 and a Bodyguard 380. I’ve been trying to get used to the Bodyguards trigger and now realize how awful it really is. The Bersa’s isn’t that great either. Going from 92Fs to the Bodyguard is shocking and difficult.

Lastly, I have a great vender.

I think I’m going to sell the two 380’s and look at another carry handgun. The 3” S&W model 60 has caught my eye and I still want to try a 1911. I’ll have around $1100 +/- to spend after I sell the two handguns and add it to what’s currently in the gun fund. I don’t need to spend all of it, that’s just what’s available.

I’m partial to hammers on guns. I’d want smaller than the XD40 and 92Fs but larger than a pocket gun. I don’t care what caliber it is but the smaller the gun, the smaller the caliber. I’d lean towards 9mm even in a 1911 just because of cost but I wouldn’t rule out anything.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I forgot to mention. While I liked the Airweight I wasn't really sold on any of the guns I shot. They were just definite improvements over what I have, generally speaking.

If you liked the Airweight and the 60, the way to go is the Ruger LCR, although it doesn't have a hammer.
For an auto, look at the Colt Defender in either 9mm or .45ACP.

The SR9c’s trigger was very light and took some getting used to.

My thoughts, too. I bought mine after reading a review that said the trigger pull was long enough and stout to the point that the gun really didn't need a safety. Not true at all. (Didn't have a chance to try one out first...special ordered it from a lgs.) Good characteristic for the range, but not my ideal for a defense weapon.

I find myself going back to revolvers.

How did you like the 26?

It was ok. I couldn’t get a full grip, which I didn’t like, but it had a better trigger than my Bodyguard 380, which I also can’t get a full grip on. The owner had an ankle holster for it. Not something I’d want to try but he said it worked ok.

Recently got a springfield 9mm emp, compact 1911 I really like this one.
I’m considering one of those, or the Colt Defender mentioned above, or the Kimber Ultra Aegis, which I went and handled today.

Thanks for the Colt recommendation. I’d never heard of that one before. There were no Springfields or Colts to be had.

I liked the Kimber on a brief inspection. Not cheap at $1099 but that seems to be competitive with what I’ve seen online. I’ve read some bad reviews on the Kimbers but I can’t tell if it’s accurate or internet exaggeration.

They also had a 3” model 60 and a comparable 3” SP101. I could get two SP101’s for the price of the Kimber.
