Grip tape

Better tape than the idiots with a soldering iron "stippling", or as I call it, ruining, a gun. It doesn't really bother me, as most of the ones I see are Glocks and I don't care about them at all, but in general I'm not a fan of over the top texturing, like the little nubs on my Beretta APX-A1 Carry. Not a bad gun, after I sanded down those nubs on the front and back of the grip area. It was $175 after rebate, any cheap gun I have no problems modding/damaging the looks of. I found it really unpleasant to even hold, let alone shoot out of the box. Do people REALLY need such aggressive texturing on a 9mm gun?

>>Do people REALLY need such aggressive texturing on a 9mm gun?<<

Well, like so much in the firearms industry (and life in general), it's much ado about very little.

I'm not a fan of it- it always ends up peeling off, esp. if a solvent gets on it, or in any hot environment. The best way to improve the grip on guns like a Glock is to either permanently re-texture it, or just use pieces of rubber inner tube from bicycle tires.

I can say that Hornady One Shot CLP does not seem to affect the adhesive of the Talon Grips I have put on my two G34s, G43 and G48. I occasionally spray the internals with One Shot and it get on and around the adhesive at the edges of the tape. No issue yet.
I haven’t tried any other solvents to see what would happen.
I also have a G45. I like the texture the way it is so that one gets no Talon Grip. I would love it if I could duplicate the Glock Gen 5 grip texture on my 2 Gen 3 Glock 34s.
I didn’t care for the grip size of the G43 and the G48. I put Talon Grips on them hoping I would like the grip with the tape on them. I didn’t. They still moved around too much in my hands. I sold them.

Talon Grips is what I use in a couple of pistols. It does help (me) a lot. I like their 'Pro' grips.
I was going to try their Pro grip - half rubber / half granulate, but after having a Granulate grip rub my skin with a holstered gun I thought I would just waste money on the Pro grip.
How does the Pro Grip feel? Is it sharply gritty?

I know that after firing 150 plus rounds one day shortly after installing the Granulate Grip on my G34 my hands felt really weird and the grip of my gun looked like it had the top 2 layers of my palm skin imbedded in the grip. 😆

What is this new phenomenon of using grip tape on everything?

I don't know about new, I started after I found out how much my hands liked the texture of SVI's grip (right) that was not tape. I just found the tape to be an easier method to achieve the texture.

It simply takes less clamping force from my hands to hang on to them and that speeds me up.

That’s what I found. Quicker follow up shots and multiple shots on target. I no longer compete in handgun competitions, but shooting well is still important to me.

It's not. I bought the sandpaper one, and after touching it I put it back in the package. The pro doesn't bother me at all. I can carry the 43X all day without discomfort.

Thank you @InTheSwamp
I removed the granulate grip from the one G34, but left the other one with the rubber grip. I think I will try the Pro on the naked one. If I like it then I will switch the one with the rubber.
I appreciate the feedback.

Help me understand what's going on here with grip tape on everything. Some guy gets new grips for his gun because he doesn't like the old grips and what does he do? He wraps the new grips in grip tape. Some guy gets a knife He likes the handle and what does he do? He wraps the handle in grip tape. New tactical flashlight, yep, you guessed it wrapped in grip tape. A can of o c spray yup, grip tape.

This is the first I've heard of it being a "new" phenomenon, but then I don't spend much time on IG or Facebook gun "influencer" pages, so perhaps I missed it. Folks have been modifying the grips of their guns to suit their individual aesthetic and/or ergonomic preferences for hundreds of years.

Why is it idiotic for someone to modify the grip of their gun to be more "grippy" but not idiotic for someone to modify the grip to be less "grippy"?

Back in ‘83 I bought a Colt Combat Gov’t .45 Colt 1911.
The gun came with a Pachmayr rubber grip set that was connected by a rubber piece that wrapped around the front strap. Loved that grip.
I could not believe how many people seemed to have a heart attack over the grips and front strap that I had on my gun…it came from Colt that way.
I would love to know how many of those whiney busy-bodies ended up with the same grips after they became a fad.

Likely the same type of people that belittle those that shoot a handgun with two hands. Some people never advanced past 1930's shooting techniques.

It’s funny you should mention that. The most grumping came from the guys at the range where I shot Bullseye matches at the time. 😆

Seems like some people enjoy the grip to the point of pain, and my APX-A1 Carry was at that point. I've shot stippled Glocks that hurt too.

Everyone has their preferences. That doesn't make everyone else's preferences "idiotic". Perhaps those folks have more calloused hands than you that aren't "hurt" by a more aggressive grip on their weapon.

I guess I should mention that I didn't mean specific cutouts like Talon Tape or grips, but just that tape that's wrapped around handles of various things.
Still wondering why it matters at all?

I.e. That piece is for my thumb to get extra traction. If you think every stock gun meets every need you are misinformed. 611A7EE1-D09E-488C-8409-B2A93A0704FB.jpeg

When you use grip tape (Talon type) or aggressive skateboard type does it catch on your clothing when carrying concealed or do you just use it on range guns?

I guess it's just me, but about the only gun I've ever owned or shot that needed "grip" was my Dan Wesson 44, with the smooth wooden grip on it, and IMHO, it was as much psychological as it was in reality, as I shot it without a lot of drama, but my hands were a lot better back then. Now it would be with rubber grips and I would probably shoot .44 Spl in it.

Again, I wasn't referring to decal grip. Tape like the kind that you wrap around hockey sticks that people wrap around gun grips instead of the rubber bands that they used to do....

No, the grit is smaller than that. I bought my grip tape at a skateboard shop that no longer exists but they had many different choices I could go feel before I bought.

My favorite isn’t as aggressive as checkering but does provide an incredible grip. I even save the backer as a template for future grips.

Hickok45 uses it on several guns. He's a big guy with big hands. Just to beef up the grip a little and sometimes to help with sweaty hands on slick grips or whatever. No big thing. Whatever toots your horn.
