Ground blinds now need orange in Iowa

New regulation for 2007-2008 in Iowa. Shotgun hunters are required to put a 12"X12" piece of hunter orange on their ground blind and visible from any direction. No distinction between between permanent or portable ground blinds. Maybe we should just run up a hunter orange flag on a pole. Can't say I've ever seen a ground blind offered with orange panels, but maybe they're out there.

Usually these things are a result of an incident....can't help but wonder about the story behind this one.

I actually agree with this one. I once was hiunting during modern gun season on public land when something about 30yds to my left caught my eye I had to stare for a moment to see it was a hunter's head WITH NO HAT poking out of a open top ground blind. I thought to myself what an IDIOT had there been a deer between me an him on the way in I would have been puttin hot lead in his direction. I was lucky I happened to see him as it was.

At the very least I attach a couple of orange caps to the poles on a couple corners of my doghouse blind. It's not like the deer care anyhow, a blind could be pink with hello kitty embroidered all over it and as long as it hid the hunters motion he would be just as successfull.

The camo everything trend is just a scam for gullible hunters gobble up.

Years ago, the owner of the television station in Columbus, Georgia, Riddley Bell, used to have his own outdoor program (which no doubt made all the people who worked for him cringe.)

He had one of his hunting buddies construct a ground blind in the the studio, Then the guy said, "Now this here is the secret, Riddley" and he reached behind a counter and took out a stuffed deer's head which he hung on the blind. "See, a deer'll see this and think it's another deer."

That was too much for even Riddley. "But George, what if a hunter thinks it's a deer?"

"Safety first," said George, as he reached behind the counter again and took out a sign that said, "They is a man in here" and hung it around the deer's neck.

I believe in hunter orange & also believe that deer/elk don't care . . . wearing that beats getting shot by a HUGE margin! Years ago in Montana, some dude shot my bro in law's tan scout as he was crawling up a steep road . . . killed it too . . . right through the block. The guy said he was positive he was shooting at an elk. Had all I could do to convince the elk's driver that beating the guy to a pulp probably wasn't a real good idea, as they didn't have "hunt-release programs" at the county lock-up.

Just for the sake of discussion....don't think you're going to convince many Turkey or bow hunters to wear orange.

hell you can buy camouflage chainsaws now, talk about dumb! I bet those are really easy to loose in the underbrush.



Turkey is the ONLY critter where camo matters. Bowhuntin PAH! You could climb into your stand wearing one of Liberace's outfits and be just as successful. That is if you aren't mistaken for a giant mink by some trapper

Correct me if I'm wrong but to a deer doesn't blaze orrange just appear as a dull brown due to the way a deer sees different colors than a human?

Deer are essentially red-green color blind like some humans. Their color vision is limited to the short (blue) and middle (green) wavelength colors.

As a result, deer likely can distinguish blue from red, but not green from red, or orange from red. Therefore, it appears that hunters would be equally suited wearing green, red, or orange clothing but perhaps slightly disadvantaged wearing blue.

Birds see colors. Turkeys not only see colors, they're known to be among the best at "pattern identification". That is, if anything today looks a bit different from the way it looked yesterday, a turkey will likely spot the difference. That triggers the "I'm-leaving-right-now-goodbye!" reflex.

I have read that doves tend to avoid the color blue. That's a good reason to wear khakis instead of Levis when dove hunting.

Deer and coyotes and such see mostly shades of gray. That's why any old dull material in some general earth-tone color is just as good as camo when hunting them.

Not sure that I buy into this. You see them cutout things guys make for their yards. Looks like a cowboy, bears, whatever. They're totally a black silhouette but you can still tell what it is. Bet deer can too.

Part of the camo thing is breaking up the identifiable outline.

FWIW...I had a pair of insulated coveralls in the original RealTree. They must have given off UV, because deer could see me even if I was mostly hidden in brush. Now I use Mossy Oak and I've had decent sized bucks walk within 10 feet while I was standing next to a tree. Not sure it's the camo pattern so much as the UV given off by the material.

I read in the article I posted that deer may be able to see the UV light in clothes where certain dyes are used so that may be true.

NO That's how bow hunters manage to kill deer. If you don't make any sudden movement the deer just thinks you're part of the tree. There are exactly three things a deer sees.

1 Things to eat, These typically don't move

2 Things that won't eat them, landscape rocks trees and other non predatory animals, These move depending

3 And things that will eat them, These ALWAYS move

Since as a hunter you don't smell like a cow or raccoon, If you're squirmin about a deer is going to assume you fit into category number 3


The closest I've ever been to a deer was during squirell season, I had a doe come within 6' of me and stay there for almost 5 minutes trying to figure out what I was. she would snort paw at the ground and stare at me trying to figure out what I was. I never moved she finally lost interest and went about her business. Was I camoed out NOPE I was wearing a Led Zeppelin T shirt blue jeans and a green white and red Orielle's summer nationals hat.


I've never bothered with camo since, I just make certain to wear darker colors.
