GSG5 for protection/survival arm?

What are your ideas on the GSG5 for a survival rifle? Im not talking about taking a .22rf into combat but what about the GSG5 as a survival arm that could be used for self protection. I am not going to trade my AR for one but what are your thoughs on adding it to the survivalist armory.

I would just as soon use a stainless steel Ruger 10/22 over a GSG5. More common parts, just as effective at what you are asking it to do. Cheaper.

Seriously though I would get something much more proven and reliable, with spare parts very easily available. My first choice would be the ruger 10/22 and secondly the marlin papoose for it's ability to break down quickly.

True but I would probably reach for a 22LR AFTER I expended everything else. Haha.

If this is a 'survival' situation, how many guns do you plan on carrying around? I wouldn't waste additional weight on carrying a whole arsenal of various .22 LR rifles.

Me either but then again I don't carry all of my rifles and shotguns hunting at the same time either.

Right, it is pretty heavy for a .22, something like a pound+ more than a Ruger 10/22.

Replacement parts would be a consideration too. Even with Ruger 10-22 as popular as they are I don't know any local stores that stock replacement parts so parts would be stocked up.

My ideas for the GSG5 being a survival rifle aren't good.

Fact 1: It's better then having no gun at all.

Fact 2: It's not better than A LOT of other guns it might go up against.

I think a GSG 5 would be fine.

It is very accurate and you can send rounds down range fairly quickly.
Mine has been very reliable as well.

I'm fairly confident that my 10/22 can be used as a club if need be, and will still shoot just fine afterwards. Could probably also be used as a hiking stick, splint, or impromptu baseball bat (though where are you going to find enough people for a team during TEOTWAWKI?).

The GSG-5, on the other hand, is apt to fall apart if you sneeze too hard on it. No thanks.

There seems to be a trend that guns must have the "evil black" look to be a "survival" or HD gun.

Every thing I've seen in equipment for serious outdoor use is more minimalist, i.e. lighter is better. Just because something looks mean doesn't necessarily make it stronger, tougher, or better for the job.

If a .22 rifle is what you want, as mentioned before consider something like the Marlin stainless Papoose. It's a known quantity based on one of the most reliable actions out there.

Use the weight advantage to carry more important stuff like food and liquids, or extra ammo.

Anything you shoot won't feel slighted because you only used a sporting gun.

Okay, the GSG-5 is just a semi-auto .22 that looks like the really tough and battle proven MP5. It isn't the same gun! Is isn't the same caliber. It isn't even made by HK.

Just because it resembles and HK doesn't mean it is comparable to an HK.

But there are MANY better choices, even many better ..22LR choices

I haven't shot the GSG-5, but handling one in the gun store, it appeared that the magazines are open sided for a part of their length? Seems like that would be a bad idea for a survival arm, if they don't also make closed-sided ones.

You're right. I'd MUCH rather have a GSG-5 than a real HK.

I saw an article on Gunblast on the GSG5 the writer thought that the GSG5 would be a good survival rifle. Just wanted to see what everyone else thought.
