What do you guys make of this?

(CBS5) The presence of the supernatural and the influence of voodoo long have been synonymous with New Orleans.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, members of the U.S. military are saying that there's something spooky going on and it's not just images of death and destruction that's haunting them.

By all accounts, the Sophie B. Wright Middle School in New Orleans sits empty and evacuated except for military personnel who have taken over the campus as a staging site for missions around the battered city.

But the men in uniform have the feeling that they're not alone. It prompted a chaplain to utter this directive: "In the name of Jesus Chris, I command you Satan to leave the dark areas of this building."

Said Sgt. Robin Hairston of the California National Guard: "I was in my sleeping bag and I opened by eyes and in the doorway was a little girl. It wasn't my imagination."

Hairston wasn't the only one seeing things. Spc. Rosales Leanor had her own close encounter.

"I was using the restroom and I just saw a little shadow," Leanor said. "Kind of looming in front of me."

Another member of the Guard unit said that she saw and heard a little girl laughing when she opened a closet that contained cleaning supplies.

At a Baton Rouge marina, boats were strewn like trash, but not a shred of paper could be found. Except for the pages of a Bible that was found by a soldier. It was open to the Book of Revelation.

At a nearby church, nearly destroyed, another Bible was found, showing the exact same passage from Revelation.

Like the power of nature, there is a power at work in New Orleans that defies explanation.

Indeed... must be something in the water. Who would expect that two copies of the best-selling book of all time would be found open to the same page in a city of people who likely own twenty million copies of it. I wonder how many were open to Ezekiel 25:17

Finding a Bible in a church isn't all that unusual. Finding a Bible in the trash from destroyed homes in NO certainly isn't unusual.

Now if a hundred or a thousand Bibles are found all opened to the same page, that would be unusual. :)

And people do like a good ghost story. :)

On another board there was a discussion about demonic possession. One fellow was in a profession that brought him into contact with "possessed" people.
He said that of all he had seen there was one that he believed was really possessed.

I asked him how he knew it just wasn't a really far out person with a really bad mental problem?

He admitted that it just came down to his feelings.

I was hoping he saw the possessed one floating in the air and spinning their head around 360 degrees. :D

NO has a long reputation for ties to Haiti and voodo. These men are tired and surrounded by death. I'm sure lots of guys have been telling ghost stories since they got there. The power of suggestion is very powerful indeed.

All totally empty places that should have people are spooky.
"...influence of voodoo long have been synonymous with New Orleans..." Not as much as in Haiti.

Yeah, it's called justice. Or the ghost of it.

It could also be the nagging Ghost of Individual Freedoms, which are also recently, traumatically deceased there.

Or it could just be the Ghost of Better Human Nature, which disappeared shortly after the flooding began.

They say God can send messages in small ways just as well as big. Two separate Bibles open to the same passage of Revelations? If I were there and saw it, I'd probably take it as a sign myself.

Of course, I don't need to be in NO to see that TS is beginning to HTF.

Probably overtired and overworked

The men and women who are pulling duty in N.O. are very likely overtired and overworked with the relief and recovery efforts. That and the power of suggestion can do things to your mind that you and I from the comfort of our keyboards can easily rationalize and explain. Having said that, there is a very real and powerful force in this world that we don't understand. Hollywood has made much of it and many are convinced it is all make-believe. Much is, some is real.

Beat me to it as well. I'm surprised none of them have seen Washington or Jefferson looking down upon them as they stand idle while the police are stripping our fellow Americans of their rights.

Alot is probably due to exaustion and over active imaginations...I will admit that 2 bibles open to the same passage is a bit odd, however, it was only 2 not 100, so I'm going to chalk that one up to coincidence that 2 people were reading the same passages at a similar time...NO is known for being a hotbed of supernatural activity whether you believe in it or not...so many of the guardsmen/women have that in the back of their heads while they are down there...

I was in NO back in 97, I spent time wandering around the cemeteries and trying to find "haunted" stuff....never did find anything more interesting then Marie Laveau's grave (famous Voodoo Queen), which if I recall correctly was in St. Loius cemetery #3....the cemeteries get rather creepy as the odd fog forms in them sometimes during the day...that and the temperature drops about 10-15 degrees as you move deeper into the mausoleum rows...The architecture was amazing, but certainly did feed that whole "haunted" idea....

Anything is possible. If it was real to them, that's all that matters.
Spoken like a modern journalist. Some of this is probably just rumor. Most of the rest is just fatigue, anxiety, fear, what-have-you.

And then maybe a few cases are demons with nothing better to do.
