I was reading the Bryce Report on the atrocities commited in Belgium during the first World War by the German Army. Something stuck out at me:
The Belgian Gov, knowing the Germans were going to take over attempted to collect all the guns from their own civilian population beforehand- thinking this would help avoid provoking the invading army.
Of course it did not work- the German Army committed large numbers of massacres and rapes on the population. They even used Belgian civilians as human shields during the fighting. Anyone civilian found with a gun in their house was murdered.
