Hopefully this isn't sounding like spam to some of you guys, I talked with Oleg Volk in PM about this ahead of time.

I've noticed we have some pretty good posters in the legal and political section and I've been using a lot of stuff on here as arguements against antis, i've also been using some stuff from gunfacts and getting updated news from THR. I hang around a chat program called "Paltalk" which is a chat room based program. It supports high quality voice chat, webcams, and text. I normally hang out in the political section of the program and it's constant talk about the Iraq War and Zionism and all kinds of boring stuff.

I have been running a room the past 2 months called "Gun Control Unconstitutional" and I was surprised that the first night I had the room open, had about 60 users in there and we had a good debate with some antis about the facts. We also had some good discussions about SHTF encounters and what was happening around the world and the US with Gun Control. The past few weeks i've been averaging about 20-25 people, haven't had my room open for a while. Most of the people that come in are the same people. I figured maybe some of the folks who post in this section might be interested in debating with some antis (most are europeans, canadians or liberal lefties) on the program. I figure it can't hurt to try to improve the image of gun owners and facts always help in a debate.

Anyways for those of you interested I have a walkthrough to getting started, the room isn't always open and I am definitely looking for some admins. My username on paltalk is PILMAN so feel free to add me.

First of all to download paltalk you will need to go to

    http://www.paltalk.com/en/start_chatting.shtml

this is the page you should see, click on "download"

once it's finished downloading, go through the install program

Once the installs over, select "New User? Get a nickname"

    register your nickname

Log on to paltalk, you'll see a bunch of tabs

    Click chat rooms, then rooms

Once you get under the rooms tab, make sure at the top you select adult content on to view R rated rooms and A rated rooms, a lot of times we are A rated but I have noticed that this effects the number of users that come into the room so a lot of times we leave it at G. Select social issues and politics, then select government and politics and you'll see our room in that section.

Once you are in the room this is what your view will be like

From there you can talk by pressing the "push to talk button" or holding left "CTRL". Most people click "Raise Hand" and get in a line or que to use the microphone. Admins have a @ in front of the name. Overall it's pretty easy to use, I don't know if anyone will be interested or join but seeing as we have all the knowledgeable folks over here it would be nice to get some people in the room from here that know what their talking about. Sometimes i'm the only one on mic and it gets old, other times we have quality chats, our busy days appear to be thursday (sometimes), Fridays and Saturdays. For some reason Mondays appear to be popular as well. If anyone has questions, you can PM me, AIM me or catch me on Paltalk if you want.

I've seen some of these rooms get huge, some of the "anti terrorist" rooms get up to 500 people or more, so I figure why not a room against Gun Control?

I give it 72 hours before it's entirely filled with porn bots...

still I applaud the effort. It's more than my lazy butt's done...

Yuck. That requires ActiveX. ActiveX is major source of hacking.

Actually we had a decent attendence. No bots on paltalk. Not a huge room tonite but got about 19 users. None from THR that i'm aware of =/. I've been running the room for the past 4 months on a weekly basis.

Overall had about 3 cops in the room tonite (all pro gun) and a few antis from Australia and the UK.

It's a little different than IRC, rooms not always open. We open it mainly on Thursday, (sometimes) Friday, Saturday and Monday.

Don't use the Active X guys, not unless you don't want to install Paltalk.

Rating was changed to A to preserve freedom of speech ;)

How well does this work on dialup? (Unfortunately, I'm still in the Stone Age...)

This PalTalk thing is a spyware abomination. IRC would work better; there are IRC servers that get thousands of users to a room even during slow periods. Windows users who aren't familiar with IRC should visit mirc.com; download the program there and you'll be set to start with IRC.

    In case you hadn't heard....
Not everyone is running MS, and not everyone is capable of running Active-haX controls.
If there isn't an OS-blind version of a particular software, then people like me aren't going to participate.

It doesn't particularly matter when talking about Gun Control, since for now most people like me are in non-US locations, where the gun control damage is already done. But once MS stops supporting XP you'll be looking at a different story here in the US.

    help

I'm trying to get on another open chat there on paltalk and I can't. How do you get involved in the chats? I signed up, gave a username etc. downloaded the active-x controls. (didn't know that was bad).
    Thanks!

Damn, PILMAN, that looks like a lot of work to go through just go get your heart rate up. Better off to just run around the block a couple of times (at least then you'll be in a better mood afterward).

Ya know, I've been debating with antis and collectivists for years.

I've come to the conclusion that the divisions in our culture are too great to be overcome and someday we're going to end up being shot at by those people (thankfully we'll be better armed and trained).

That is true that at one point Paltalk was known to have adware. There was huge controversy about it.

Paltalk was once criticized for allegedly installing the MySearch toolbar from MyWay without the users knowledge[1], however they no longer engage in this practice. The installion occurred due to users not unticking the toolbar inside the advanced section when installing. MySearch toolbar was usually installed unbeknownst to the user due to this. PalTalk now offers Google toolbar, as well as Google Desktop, both of which can be deselected by the user before installation.

I did have about 2 or 3 THR members pop in the room at about 3 in the morning. I guess we could do IRC, the thing I like about paltalk is the cam and voice features. The voice quality is very good though I guess you could do the same thing with Skype.

There is a version for linux as well.

The reason you may have not been able to get on is I closed the room at 3 AM last night. I will have the room open at about 6:00 PM central tomorrow. I might open it tonite, depends. If anyone needs help, just PM me or message me on Paltalk my username is "PILMAN"

Unfortunately no, Paltalk is it's own program (different server) seperate from IRC.

How do those of us that don't use Windows or IE use this thing?

I assume that anything that is tied to Windows and/or IE has
    an ulterior motive.

For those of you who either don't run Windows, or don't want to run the official Paltalk program - let's figure out a way to get this to run without the actual Paltalk program.

I found a couple mentions online of GAIM having an extension/plugin for Paltalk. I can't find the official website yet though for it.

Also PILMAN - check this site out. Maybe it has some tools you can use to control your room. I'm not sure if they violate the Paltalk TOS, you should check first. http://www.locohacker.net/download/Paltalk_Programs/index.html

I did find this. Seems to be somebody running Paltalk under Wine (? I think?):

Let me know what anybody finds on this and Linux and/or BSD Unix.

oh I see PILMAN already mentioned the GAIM plugin - the problem is that I don't like downloading packages that aren't from their original source. Typically actually I like to compile from source when possible (not as often as I'd like).

Let's work on finding a solution for this guys.

AOL never bought paltalk, it's still owned by Jason Katz.

I have a Paltalk account and have been running it for sometime with no trouble. Look for the handle "giantmidget".

    I'll be in any minute.

I'm about to give up with Linux for the night and just use my spare Windows laptop for the chat until I figure out something on Linux.

I love Linux - but sometimes it can be a pain with lesser-used applications.
