I finally escaped from California! “Yay, me!”:D As my daughter used to say.

Anyway, I am currently in transit to my new home in West (by gawd) Virginia and my wife and I stopped at the original Cabela’s in Sidney Nebraska a couple of days ago. It was obvious the Bass Pro “influence” (nice way of saying BS) was alive and well there. Trigger guards on everything and high prices on gun library guns.

I spotted these 2 and snapped a couple photos. The prices were high, but man, I was drooling over that model 14.

They had them all polished up with wax, it appeared. I did not handle them and there weren’t many revolvers, maybe a dozen. They had a nice looking GP100 priced at “brand new” pricing of just under $900. I didn’t get a photo.

I was so excited to finally get to visit the original Cabela’s. Sure wish I had been able to before BPS took over.

Cabelas gun library is basically a marketing scam. Ive seen a number of things go on there that shows it pays to know what you're looking at, and what things are worth. It also pays to go out to their main counters and look before you buy too.

Back when the German police P1/P38 trade ins came in, they had a fairly rough version of one in the gun library with its accessories for over $500, like it was something special, when out in the main counter, they had a half dozen of them, with the same stuff, for the more or less normal price at the time of about $250.

Another experience we had with them was when my dad saw a Browning O/U clays gun he was interested in at another library and had it sent in to the store we usually go to. The gun was nice, but came as it was, no box, or accessories, chokes, ect. They wanted $2500 for it. My dad was looking at it and talking to the boy in the library, and I was getting bored, so I went out and started looking around the main counter. There, they had a number of the same exact gun, NIB, on sale, for $1500!

I went back and told the old man what I saw, and asked the guy was that gun he had something special or what, and what the difference was. The look on his face was priceless, and it wasnt a happy look.:p

Im not saying they dont have some nice and different stuff in there from time to time, but you really need to do you're homework, know what it is youre looking at, and what things are currently going for. Just dont get sucked in by the marketing aspect of that room. :)

I like to see what they have in the library. As far as Bass pro take over. I noticed gun prices came down. And scopes are reasonable. I never bought a gun from them when it was owned by Cabala's. My 1st gun i bought there was my Taurus PT111. I was going to get it at Durhams for 229.00. I checked Cabala's price on line. It was 199.00. Back then gas was not high. The extra 30 miles to get the gun was worth saving 30 bucks. I got my Browning buck-mark 380 median from them. They were cheaper than any one else. Reloading supplies are not too bad there. But my one LGS is cheaper.

Yeah, bass pro where I live isn’t overpriced for guns. Many local LGS’ are more

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR ESCAPE!!!
As for Cabelas gun library, I like to stroll through it when I stop by. I did purchase a Para LDA 9mm out of there once. Never could get it to function reliably so sent it on its way. I didn't think the price I paid was too bad, but yeah, you really need to be well studied before buying from the..

I will agree that Cabela’s did have some guns that they overpriced in the libraries, but they occasionally had smokin’ deals. They also gave fair prices for guns that they bought. Well, once BPS bought Cabela’s they no longer give decent offers in used guns, hence the sparse inventory of used guns for sale. You can bet they gave the seller around $300 a piece for those guns I posted above. Maybe $400 if they got lucky.

I reckon they’re like most gun shops… laughably overpriced on many things but once in a while something comes in that the guys behind the counter aren’t familiar with and it gets priced on the cheap side. I’m only in Cabelas once a year or so but I do make a point to swing through the library just to check.

Just drove past that store twice in the last month during my move from WA to AL. Didn’t end up stopping, my hotel is Lincoln was calling to loudly by that point in the day. Good luck on your move. I’m getting my AL drivers license this week and I’m going strait to a gun store to buy a handgun without a waiting period, wooooo!

I live bout 35 miles from Sidney and have been in that Cabela's a lot over the years, although it's probably been almost a year since I've been in there.
They used to have a lot of used guns and I've got some good deals in there, but the Gun Library never had anything for me.
Now they have guns marked as used that look new and are priced accordingly.
It's hard to find used guns anywhere around here although there is one smaller gun shop that takes trades and has a few. I but quite aa few from them.

Bought a Colt New Navy/Army in 32WCF from the Library in KC, Kansas a few years ago. I even managed to haggle about 15% off due to condition.

Cabelas/BPS are too far away for me to really do much shopping there. 75 to 100 miles one way. At 12 mpg... Especially when Midway, JoeBobs, Brownells, and Grafs are all but a day's shipping away.

Wilmer Brauer, an uncle, still farms outside of Sidney. My mother’s family (Printz) and my
Dad’s family (Fees) may still have distant relatives in the area. Not sure anymore.

BOARHUNTER

PS: My Dad’s Dad moved to Peetz, Colorado, to be closer to The Hot Spot Bar, I believe..,, At least that is what Grandma suspected!

I thought you had a few more years in that hell hole to go Pat ? Any way West Virginia is a great state to expatriate to ! I looked into moving to Harper West Virginia which was farms just across from Monterey Virginia (a border town) when I retired in 2018 . I was tpld West Virginia was the "free state" that Virginia USED to be. I do have good long time friends in West Virginia and they love it, they expatriated from NJ 30 years ago. Good luck and have the fun you missed in LA in your new home!

I was going to stick until 2024, but my exec. mgmt. decided to play stupid games so I gave them a stupid prize. I walked. :D
My health wasn’t worth their BS.

Now I live in the USA again.
I have been shopping for guns that aren’t on the CA roster. I am tempted to buy a Kel Tec CP33 just for the hell of it. Maybe I’ll photograph myself with it and send a copy to Newsom for a laugh.
