When last I worked on this critical and earth-shattering comparison, I had documented a previous batch of tests. As posted on TFL,I had conclusively proved that computer hard drives offer no real resistance to rifle bullets ranging in caliber from 6.5mm to .308 and on up to .45. Went through 'em like a hot knife through butter, as it were.

Today, 2 more balky hard drives sacrificed their platters to the good of ballistic science. :scrutiny:

Loads were carefully chosen, and the controlled scientific environment was prepared accordingly. :p

First off, at 25 yards, a S&W Model 52, firing a 148gr Berry's copper-plated double-ended wadcutter at a leisurely 800fps or so. The bullet kinda stuck halfway into the hard drive, as seen below:

(if you look closely at the M-52's safety, you can see your's truly composing the picture!)

Ok, so maybe a laptop computer can shield a person from a deranged Bullseye pistolero...

Next test, another hard drive, 25 yards, with a hard-cast, gas-checked 158gr SWC scooting closer to 1000fps from a 6" PPC/Steel Challenge revolver. This time, the bullet went completely into the hard drive, but didn't exit. Just what we're looking for in energy transfer when trying to incapacitate a rampaging Seagate hard drive, a good loss of byte pressure. Another of the same round, a little bit higher in the platter spindle area, completely blew away the back side of the drive, thereby stopping the unprovoked attack once and for all:

Ok, maybe the Mall Ninja could get some protection out of hard drives were they woven into his tactical black Dockers as he's using his body to shield his partner. Next week - tune in while more hard drives suffer their fates in front of a P-08 Luger, .357 Desert Eagle, .45 ACP 1911 clone, and 7mm-Rimmed International Wichita Silhouette pistol!

Considering the declining quality of drives, one doesn't have to wait too long to fuel a hobby such as this :cuss:

My current hard drive is about to give up the ghost,I think that I'll run a few 55 Gr. FMJ .223 Rem. rounds through it...

Thanks for the inspiration, Gewehr98 !:D

We once took a pile of DOA maxtors out to the range for some perferation testing

The resulting product was then shipped back to the manufacturer for warrenty replacement

they were amused

First drive I ever shot was a Digital Equipment Corp R80 - an AC belt-fed, ~200 Meg-thing - 40 pounds+, a sand cast housing & a modern dinosaur - circa '80

A .308 totaly smoked that babe, though when a nut-job killed his SO, & he came into The Hive one night & committed suicide (after "killing" all our "resurces,) ... they still worked.

"Takes a shootin' & keeps on bootin'" was a watch-word - for a while .... didn't really last all that long though ....

Not something you'd rally "celebrate."

It seems interesting that we have both been experimenting with hard drives. I used a hard drive that died in a Compaq and I didn't bother with wimpy pistol calibers.

I knocked mine out with a .308 from 200 yards.

Did the Hard drives attack you first and your shots were fired in self defense ? OR was this a case of mercy killing ? :D

I just noticed the pictured drive is a Fujitsu. Is that a Japanese word for "junk- with no warranty"? I've got a dead one that only lasted for 8 months that will definitely go on my next trip to the mountains. I've got an SMLE that would like to exact some revenge.

Syquest 44 meg data cartridges are really nice targets

i usually shuck them from the plastic carrier

the platter warps into cool shapes when struck

me thinks a 12 guage breneke would do a number on a HD, a 75 cal flintlock would have some nice ludditte juju too.

A friend of mine worked for the city and had computer problems for a long time before they finally gave in and replaced his computer.

We took his old computer up in the hills and put some buckshot and shotgun slugs through it. Great exit wounds and permanent wound channel.

When we got back down I suggested he drop it off outside the I.S.D. door, but he declined.

Hmmmm, I wonder if this is why we've hung on to the Mac SE, the Mac Classic, and a real dinosaur, a Heathkit H-89!!!

I've got a feeling that the damage to the drives would be much greater with a heavy slow round, like an underloaded .44 Spl, say 200gr at 650fps than with any of the zippy small-to-medium bore varmint and deer rifle rounds.

Now just need a nice weekend!
