I went to the gun show today and found Russia 7.62x39 for $5.00 a box or $124.95 for 500 rds. and Federal .223 55gr. American Eagle for $289.95 for 500 rds.

Dang, that's almost... normal. Where was the gun show?

I'll believe "almost normal" when .22 LR is plentiful at MSRP or discounted. That'll be the "normal" for me.

Why does everyone want .22 so bad?

The show was at the race track in Henrico.

I did not see any .22 ammo .

I wonder the same thing. I'll be happy when 9mm is back in stock. I don't shoot much .22lr in the first place, so my few hundred rounds is plenty. Maybe if I had another .22 gun, I might care more.

I've seen plenty of 7.62x39, mostly TulAmmo, on the shelves. It was some of the first stuff to come back in any real amounts. Made me want to go buy an AK.

Offhand, I would guess they want it so they can shoot their .22s ......;)

Because I generally shoot more .22 than all my other calibers put together. Because I have bought two new .22s at the end of last year that were six months old before I was able to find ammo to shoot them for the first time. Because .22 is fun to shoot.

A friend (who escaped "East" Germany) bought the new .22 rifle which looks exactly like the WW2 Sturmgewehr.
Along with the many AR/HK clones in .22, this explains part of the demand.

At least one guy at the range has a .22 chamber insert in his competition AR-15, or whatever the small component is called.

For me and my grandson, we always seem to have more plain old FUN with our .22's.

Very simple, .22 LR is the most highly used caliber out there. More .22's are shot than anything else.

Low recoil, low noise, really quiet when suppressed, normally cheap enough for "plinking" at informal targets.

I think US shooters were going through a couple of billion rounds of .22 every year before the shortage, so "normal" demand is pretty high.

Because it is the cheapest to shoot and extremely accurate and so many great rifles are chambered in 22.

    1. Because it's the most affordable.

    2. Because it's probably the most owned cartridge in the country.

    3. Because lack of recoil makes it easy to shoot for extended sessions.

    4. Because it's the most affordable.

Right now, it's not the most affordable...

OP, those are decent prices. I wonder if the Walmart hoarders are starting to see their sales dwindle now that everyone else is starting to be able to find ammo. I hope so.

Cheap and easy to stockpile and from what I have seen it is a gateway cartridge.

True. I've bought .45ACP in the last six months for less per round that I have seen some .22LR is going for. :(

I generally have at least 2 teenagers shooting 22 with me when I go shooting. We burn up a lot of it.

I get into ammo seek mode, then show up at Academy first thing in the morning. I may only score a couple of time a week, but I can usually get enough to enjoy the next shooting session.

Is anyone else disturbed by how buying ammo sounds almost like a heroin addict trying to get his fix? Or going to a methadone clinic to get his scheduled dose?

Nothing against those trying to find enough to keep enjoying their hobby. Just an observation of the sad state we've been in for over half a year.

I honestly have the most fun with my .22's. That is why I shoot them so often.
