Going to a gun show on Sunday afternoon. Hoping to pick up an SKS. I remember reading about SKS's being back bored or recrowned or something and that I need to watch out for that. Can't seem to remember the details. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Also, are yugo's still considered to be the prime pick?

Hopefully my collection will increase by 1 tomorrow. :-D

A newish Yugo would be a prime pick still, depending on how much you want to pay. Since they don't have chromed barrels, used ones are likely to have bad barrels from corrosive ammo. Classic Arms has them for $229.

Any barrel can be recrowned. It isn't necessarily bad but shows use on the barrel. Ideally you would want to check the throat as well, and the overall condition of the rifle. I had not heard of any particular batch of SKSs that were recrowned.

Check the firing pin on the bolt. If the tip is sticking out then it's gonna need cleaned. Certain models of SKS don't have a spring around the firing pin and they are freefloated instead. When the pin gets gummed up it has a tendancy to stick leading to slam fires.

Easily fixable with cleaning and the spring can be ordered online for about $10, but it's a sign of a gun that hasn't been cared for.

I was thinking along the same lines as onebigelf....

When you see someone selling a Yugo for more than $180, ask the seller "Are you freakin smoking crack???"
