I have just spotted something on Gunbroker and don't know whether to laugh out loud or cry. Just take a look at the bid for 1bx/20 44 mag Black Talon ammo...and she bid multiple times on top of it. That's over 5.00 a round so Black Talon ammo must be really good stuff for those who can afford it! Gunboker auction 133039413. :banghead:

I guess I'm not surprised. I've seen a lot of instances, on both gunbroker and other items on ebay, where people just went so nuts bidding that they paid more than retail price for a used item. It's nuts.

Please excuse me but the reality police must step in. Im not too much of a conspiracy theorist but I do believe there is a reason for everything.

Remember that things on auction sites are not always what they seem. If you cruise the GunBroker completed listings you will see some items that have sold multiple times (yes, the reserve was met). This either means the deal fell through 4 times or the guy has 4 Colt Python Ultimate Stainless revolvers or there is artificial bid inflation going on. You cant take these auctions too seriously. Unless you are the one bidding in them.

The completed listing for the title of that auction came up with only other auctions so this is not a case of the above I mentioned. At the same time though the ones listed all sold for between 52 and 65 dollars. Evidence that something fishy is going on.

think this has collector value because it is no longer made under the name "black talon" but an identical version under a less "evil" name is still being made. Am I correct?

Pretty much. Funny thing is that it's not that rare, I see it for sale regularly.

Some people are just too dumb for words.

I think just owning it even though it is banned sends a mess

It is not banned nor was it ever banned. It's never been illegal to buy sell have or use.

Winchester pulled it from the market voluntarily to avoid the hype which apparently you've bought into.

They even sell pretty much the exact same ammo today.

It's sold under the name of "Ranger Talon".

"... pretty much the exact same..."

Hmmmmm. Hmmmmmm. Ranger "T" is just as good, but it's not BLACK (that's what bluing-pens are for!!), and it doesn't have the TALON-petals. 1 box ea of 9x19, .40, .45, .44 Mag, and 30.06. First $1,000 gets it all. OBO. It's NOT still being manufactured, is it??

I think it sells mostly on collectors value, it's a conversation piece to have on the shelf in your gun room.

I have a couple of boxes of 10mm Talon I picked up in a trade, I think it's neat to have, I could see spending a few bucks for that cachet, but certainly not $100 a box.

Daorgih:
Debates on the relative usefulness of talons aside, the Ranger 'T' stuff does have it. It's more or less the same ammo.

I think the ghetto rats in my (South Seattle) neighborhood would pay $20 a round for 44 Mag. Black Talons, maybe more. Think about it: You'd really be the shizzle if you carried a gold .44 Deagle with those teflon coated, armor piercing, buzz-saw bullets that killed all them cops back in the day. Too bad they got banned. Now it's a felony just to see one of those bullets unless you're Special Forces.

BTW: These ghetto rats actually believe what I typed above. :banghead:

my father in law gave me a couple of .50 ammo cans of assorted stuff he had stashed, there's 10 or so boxes of black talon in 9mm and 45 auto.

People will really pay 100 bucks a box for this stuff?

Collectors I assume?

BlackTalon "ask" vs "sell" price.

Some auction-sites have had B.T. bid up to $100, but it didn't sell, for the bidders were bogus. I've seen it actually sell at gun-shows for $50, but only in less-available calibers. I have paid $45 for .50AE and 30-06. Never gonna shoot it. I still have orig. $22.50 boxes of .44mag, .40, .45, and 9x19. Not for sale. Just to look good in the cabinets. Also (ahhhh, those were the days!) Hornady +P TAP $12.99, Winchester SXT P.P $19.99, Golden Sabers $9.99, CORBON +P 165gr JHP $12.00, & Hydra-Shok @ $10.99. Most of my weekly shooting in Blazer Brass, and other reloads.

I'd rather spend the $ on components to make ammo to shoot, rather than buy stuff to display. YMMV.

Ranger T is not the same bullet as the Black Talon, Ranger SXT is the same bullet but without the black coating, Ranger T was developed to replace the SXT series. Ranger T series opens up more reliably and the talons are bigger. I tested some of the T series today in my .45 1911 commander the lead portion opened up to about .80 and the copper jacket talons were right at one inch in diameter. It penetrated 3 gallon jugs and dented the 4th which is exactly what 230gr golddots and 230gr HST+P did when I tested them.

I saw Winchester Ranger 9mm going for $89 a box at a show recently. I also saw ragged old odd boxes of all kinds of pistol ammo with price tags like $39, $45 etc etc.
