Here is my list of must own:

I dont have them all yet, but will soon.

1) .375 mag wheel gun mod 66 or 686 4" or 6"
2) 1911 GI or commander size
3) Rem 870 12 ga. slug and smooth barrels
4) Any Sig hand gun (or several of each model)
5) any .30 cal rifle (.308,30-06,.338 luppa)
6) small pocket 9mm or 40 s&w
7) j frame .38 spec for covert carry and back up

IMHO The guns that everyone should own.

1911-Choose your varient make model etc. There are so many ;)
My favorite is the Wilson Protector(Probably because my name is Wilson--Get it a Wilson Protector :D )

M1 Garand -Just because I want one, and can't think of a reason everyone else shouldn't

FAL-The right hand of democracy since the 1950's

Something by SIG I love my 228

Ruger 10/22 Given with free samples of TIDE in the Sunday paper

Winchester 1300 or Rem 870 (Ford/ Chevy)

12 guage coach gun the one with external hammers(coined the phrase I got shotgun)

Barrett light 50--reach out and touch someone.

Desert Eagle .50 Because chicks dig it.

Sten MK-IV Silenced

MP-5 in a briefcase

Thompson Sub machine gun (Gangster style)

Deringer- in .22 Mag

I'm sure there's something I'm forgetting.

Every shooter should try to own every weapon he has ever wanted at least once.
Twice if the gun is really really good!

There are a number of ways to approach this one. As a minimum for a doomsday scenario I'd say a Ruger 22 rifle. Smith L frame or Ruger SP 101 in 357 Mag. A 9mm auto in my case a BHP with 5 hi caps. 12 Gauge shotgun in my case a double, and a 30 caliber rifle, in my case a Savage Tactical.

But in this life I have a fairly large gun collection that I intend to add to. Sooooo, I carry either a Colt Commander or a Sig 229 on a daily basis.
I have a nice M-1 carbine with 2 ready 15 round clips in the stock mag pouch.
I usually also have a Brit #5 jungle carbine with a 4 power scope set up as a Scout rifle.

A good accurate .22 bolt rifle- CZ452 or remington 541.
A good bolt action .308/30-06/.300 WM
12 guage pump 870/BPS/Mossturd
.22 handgun- single six, MK2, High Standard

MinScout, I prefer my Marlin in .30-30.

ford vs. chevy, I guess.

I found a website once where a guy was loading rounds for his .30-30 that were as fast as a .308!

Talk about +++P+

All of the above mentioned firearms are great choices...I would add that since the bad guys are able to have full autos, why not the good guys? Anyone?

Every freedom loving American should own an AR-15 style rifle. Nothing says, "Never fear, the Americans are here," like that instantly recognizable profile.

AR-15 because of the easy of getting parts, mags and ammo.
1911 because it is the standard by which all other pistols are judged.
870 because it is so versatile and mod'able
Glock 19 and 23, easy of getting mags, ammo, simplicity, and reliability.
AK-47, reliable, low maintence, cheap to shoot, cheap mags.
AK-74, same as above and just in case the Soviet Union rises again or China gets over zealous.
Ruger MKII pistol, the plinking standard.
Remington 700 in 30-06, a timeless gun in a do it all caliber.
Ruger GP100 .357 mag, built like a tank with dual ammo versatility.

I'll play too! I'm just giving general types, brand is up to you.

Handguns:
A .22 semi-auto pistol
A medium-frame .357 mag revolver, 4" or 6" barrel
A 9mm semi-auto pistol
A 1911-type .45
A big-bore (.44 Mag and up) revolver, single or double action
Rifles:
A .22 rifle, semi, bolt, lever, single, name your poison A mid-range semi-auto rifle (my preference would be an SKS, but AR, AK, etc all work)
A full-power, .30 cal bolt action (Mosin, for me, but again your choice)
A full-power, .30 cal semi (Garand, SVT-40, AR-10....)
A big-bore rifle (.375 H&H and up), bolt, double, single shot

Shotguns:
12 gauge pump action, short barrel

Other:
A .36 or .44 cal cap-n-ball revolver
A .50 - .58 caliber muzzle-loader, flint or cap.

I personally own depressingly few of these....

.22 rifle -- that's basic. I like a bolt action (my favorite is my M82 Kimber.)

.22 pistol -- for the same reason. The MKII Ruger standard model wouldn't be a bad choice.

.30 caliber rifle -- my favorite is a pre-'64 Winchester Model 70 in .30-06.

.357 Mag revolver -- very versatile. My favorite is an M357 Colt.

M1911 -- for defensive use. I carry a Kimber Custom Classic.

12 gauge shotgun -- preferrably a pump. Mine is an Ithaca Model 37.

I agree with most of what's been written, but hey, I've got 2 cents so...

(Get a Garand, everyone, get a Garand.)

at a minimum everyone should have
.22 Rifle - Ruger 10/22
.22 Pistol - Ruger 22/45
.30 cal rifle, specifically M1 Garand
9mm or larger Pistol - Sig P226
12GA pump - Mossberg 500

If I could only have the above listed, I'd trade the Sig for a 1911, which I don't have. Some would trade the Rugers for whatever brand you like, CZ, Browning, you can't go wrong. Mossberg/Remington 870 pick your fave.

I think you need the .22s to practice cheaply and a lot, the centerfire pistol for when you need a pistol, and the Garand because everyone should have one.

I'd also add:
.30 cal bolt action - I've got a Mosin, but a 1903A3 would be better and share ammo with the Garand. Anybody got an 03A3 to trade for a 91/30? Anyone? No? Oh, well.
.357 revolver/lever combo - One of these days...

And lastly, as many different firearms in as many different calibers as you can get. I think that sums it up.

Get whatever Hillary would ban. I already have a good start!
--------------------------------

That would be everything. I don't think I could afford a copy of every gun ever made.

Double action revolver--S&W in .357 or .44 mag
Single action revolver--SAA in .45 Colt
Break action revolver--Webley MkII in .455 or a Schofield in .44 Russian

Single action auto--1911 or BHP (CZ75 also nice)
Double action auto--:scrutiny: :neener:
Striker-fired auto--H&K P7M*
"Weird-action" auto--Luger P08 in .30 Luger
Unlocked breech/blowback auto--Makarov or Walther PP/PPK

Target gun--SIG 210
Rimfire--Ruger Mk2 or 22/45

...oh, and a zip gun!

OK, OK, here are some of my previous picks:

For something historical:

Original Sharps in 50-70
30-40 Krag
30-06 in 1903-A3
30-06 in 1917
(future, Trapdoor Springfield, 1903, ...)

For something with easily available/cheap ammo for shooting:

9mm in Glock 19
45ACP in...many, many...please don't tell my wife!
.22lr in Ruger 77/22
.223 in Ruger Ranch Rifle
.308 in M1A
30-06 in M1 Garand
12 ga in Browning Pump Shotgun
.177 in Gammo pellet gun

For UFO's or Polar Bears:

444 Marlin in Marlin lever action
.375 H&H in CZ550 American Safari Magnum

Always reasons for more I suppose!

a Great 22 rifle. A good 22 LR revolver. a 12 gage shotgun 870 or so. A AR15 and an 308 main Battle rifle FAL, M14 or so. A good scopped 308 and 223. A good semi auto Pistol in 9mm 40 sm and 1911 in 45 acp. A good 38/357 revolver. Lots of Ammo and practice.

Cosmoline,

You mentioned a "CZ 452 trainer ". I'm a shooter, but not familiar with that one. Can you tell me more about it? Caliber, price, type? Thanks.

Okay I was thinking of firearms that are affordable so I didn't go brand specific.

Basic set that every household should have

12 guage pump shotgun
.22LR Rifle
.38/.357 4" revolver

Expanded set

.30 rifle
.22lr pistol or revolver

Anything other than that is for specific purpose or just becuase

In order:

12 gauge pump
.22 rifle
.357 or .44 mag revolver
.308 or .30-06 rifle

After that, its all vanity. :)
Or to put it another way, after that, the fun begins.
