i have an H&R 922 with a 4” barrel and I have a few questions if you don’t mind.. I’m not sure if this is the right place or not to post this but it was on the grounds that this says for revolver posting..

1) These work more like single action revolvers in terms of reloading, and this is a 9 shot revolver. Is it safe to load all 9, or is it safer to keep it resting on an empty with a load of 8 instead? I’ve heard people say you can rest the hammer between casing, and I think that is a stupid idea that likely leads to timing issues or something worse later.

2) I have read online in a few places about people who carry SA revolvers, some will carry a semi auto magazine (like a DE mag) as sort of a pez dispenser of ammo. What is the best 22 LR magazine to carry? One that would be durable in design (maybe steel), compact enough to fit in a pocket, and with at least 9 rounds would be ideal.

3) What are some different holster options? I’ve seen a few pocket carry styles online as well as a belt holster, but I don’t know of any brands to consider.

Thank you for your time in reading this far. I am not here to argue caliber or weapon debates with anybody. I’ve heard all that before. I am in need of specific advice.

IIRC the 922 uses a transfer bar that prevents the hammer from touching the firing pin unless the trigger is all the way back. Remember, the H&R handguns (most of them) use two triggers. The main trigger rotates the cylinder, does timing and cocks the hammer. It also raises the transfer bar. The secondary trigger is a tiny thing behind the primary trigger. It is what releases the hammer.

For a test. Stretch a piece of paper or aluminum foil over a spent cartridge and pull trigger as normal. Then try it by manually cocking the hammer and releasing it using just the secondary trigger and not the primary. Are there any differences?

I have an H&R 686 .22Mag /.22LR Convertible.

1 - H&R .22 revolvers have a sort transfer bar system so you can leave all chambers loaded. It loads like a single action but they are double action revolvers.

2 - Big Blue’s recommendation would work great.

3 - Hunter makes a leather holster that should work fine for your revolver. I cannot remember the model numbers right now. I will try and look for the holsters I have and see what numbers they are. I just moved recently so I would have to find them first.

Looks like 1954 if I'm reading it right. My step dad had a 922 with a 2" barrel he used to dispatch animals back when he used to trap. He claimed the gun could hit a pie plat at 3 yards and after I borrowed it for awhile I realized the front sight needed to be bent as it was shooting a couple feet to the left at five yards. Not sure what your use is but I enjoyed it while I was using it, hope it treats you well.

Thank you for the information and story. Mine is 4” and I mainly use it for the same sort of thing. I also take it with me on my boat.

That’s a good idea. Since I won’t be using it as a true magazine, something cheap like that would definitely work. I’ll have a look at their website.
