Hey guys,

My local shop sold out of powder recently, and now I am having to scour anywhere to try to find some that might work. I have found some H414, but before I purchase it I was wondering if it would be a decent powder for .308 Win 168+ gr projectiles?

Looking at Hodgdon's website there are some loads for it, but if y'all suggest I wait for another powder to *hopefully* become available, I will pass on the H414.

And no, I will not load any rounds before consulting a reloading manual, and I have one on the way and am about to order another. I would just like to grab components while they are available if possible.

H414 is very close in performance to the the Extreme powder H4350. Most reloaders are comfortable with using H4350 in the 30-06 but not as much in the .308. H414 might be just a little slow for use in the .308 especially when you load lighter bullets. Hodgdon lists data for a 165gr bullet but not a 168gr bullet with H414. Usually when a powder company doesn't list data for a combination it's not recommended you use it.

Archangel,

I saw on Hodgdon's website that they have a 175gr loading with it. It has a slower listed MV than Varget (about 60 fps).

Do you think it is worth giving a shot (no pun intended) if I am going to be using heavier projectiles since it is powder that I currently can buy?

If Hodgdon lists data then I'm guessing it's safe. Follow their data starting low and working up and you should be fine. Only one way to find out if the ammo will be accurate... Good luck and don't forget the range report so we all can learn.

Thanks for that! I am still gathering all my components (and staying on top of school work), but hopefully I will be able to get some rounds together here in the next few weeks and some range time.

If you can find some IMR4064 it's my favorite 308 powder. Like you mentioned Varget is also very good as is 4895, BL-C(2), Benchmark, IMR 8208 XBR, AA2460, AA2495, AA2520, RL15 and a few others I've probably missed.

Good luck with the loads and good luck in your classes...

H414/W760 is my go to powder for my 7mm-08 and I like it for my light 308win loads when loading with H414 alsol check for loads useing W760 as they are the same ,I was just loading some 120gr 7WSM with H414 and cross checking from my seirra book and my Lyman book I found seirra showed H414 and My lyman didn't , but lyman did show W760

H414 is a good powder for the 308 I use it in my 243 ack imp. 22-250 ack imp. 7mm-08
and it works in my 06 also I buy it 8lbs at a time.

I've used H414 in a 308 Win. with 220 grain bullets in the past with good results. I use IMR 4064 for 168 gr. bullets.

As far as reloading components go, I think there will be plenty when all the panic buying stops.

You should consider using magnum primers with the harder to ignite W760/H414 ball powders, for more consistent ignition, especially with a marginally effective powder. I realize you're dealing with a less than ideal situation. All you can do is try it and see how that powder works for you.
www.hodgdon.com listed Federal 210M match primer being used in their loads.

A good suggestion to use Magnum primers with 414. Remember to drop your powder load by 2 grains, when using a mag primer.

c1a1, thank you for that tid-bit of info.

To others in this thread: My LGS actually has Varget and IMR 4064 coming in this week so I will be waiting for it to arrive as those seem to be much more suited to a wider variety of .308 loadings.
