Found a Yugo SKS in pretty nice shape, even with some cosmo on it, for $125 at a local shop. Put $70 down, owe $68 (after taxes).
Just curious, are the Synthetic sporter stocks worth it?
 
I've had three Russian SKS rifles at various times and removed the original stock and bayonet and put synthetic stocks on two of them. (I also had a Yugo which I left in its original form.) I like shooting SKS rifles and the increased length of the synthetic stocks makes for a nicer and easier to use sight picture for me. It doesn't hurt the value since you can always put the original stock and bayonet back on. Having said that however, I'll let somebody else talk about synthetic stocks and the grenade launcher sights on Yugo's. Don't know if you have to remove them for appearances or balance with a synthetic stock. If declining memory serves me correctly, removing that sight may involve more than removing a screw. Don't know if that is a fly in the synthetic stock ointment or not.
 
I'd keep the hardwood stock on the Yugo. It has more "belly" than a regular SKS stock, and the right cutout for the folding blade bayonet. Go with a synthetic stock, and you have to lose the bayonet.

Of all the SKS variants, the Yugos have the nicest stocks, good beechwood.
 
I put a Choate Sporter stock on mine, but my SKS was a real POS when I got it. Sewer pipe barrel, dinged, scratched, oil soaked stock, etc.

The Choat does allow for a longer pull, which is nice, and the synthetic stock maintains the tough qualities of the SKS. I also dumped the ladder sight and bayo. That damned grenade launcher is the next to go...
 
I put a rubber buttpad on my SKS to extend the reach. If money is an issue, I'd buy ammo instead of a synthetic stock.

My Norinco came with an Advanced Technology sporter stock, and the tent-stake bayonet fits quite well without any apparent modification. I like the shape of the stock, but it is too heavy. If your stock is pretty and will fit a Chicomm, I'll be glad to trade you. If your Yugo has a conventionally-shaped bayonet, I guess it may require a channel to be cut. But who needs the bayo, anyway?
