By MEG KINNARD, Associated Press Writer Meg Kinnard, Associated Press Writer – SUMTER, S.C. – A 12-year-old boy was shot to death through a front door while trick-or-treating with his family, shocking residents of a South Carolina neighborhood where most people know each other well.

"I just hate it that that little kid got killed. It used to be the quietest place. I knew everybody and everybody knew me," Vivian Johnson, 81, said Saturday.

She has lived for decades two doors from the house where the boy was killed and his father and brother injured Friday night, but she said she does not know the people who live there now.

Police offered no motive and said it did not appear the family knew the people in the house, which is off a busy, two-lane road in Sumter, a city of about 40,000 people 45 miles east of Columbia. On Saturday, shattered glass still covered the front stoop and about 20 bullet holes peppered the front door and a front-window casement.

A 22-year-old man was charged with murder but it wasn't clear how — or if — he was connected to the family.

"Most times you can find an explanation no matter how strange or twisted it is. Right now we have no explanation," said Mayor Joseph T. McElveen. "Sumter's certainly not a violent town but we're not isolated to having tragedies like this happen. It doesn't make it any better."

Police said the boy, his parents and three other siblings were returning from a city-sponsored event downtown where about 4,000 costumed children had celebrated Halloween when they stopped to collect candy at a home with a porch light on. The father and children went to the door while the mother stayed in the car nearby.

As the family waited, they thought they heard fireworks. The father and two boys were hit by gunfire from inside the house. The 12-year-old died at a hospital, Coroner Verna Moore said. His father and brother were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other two children were not hurt. Authorities have not identified the family.

Quentin Patrick, 22, has been charged with murder and three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill. The home where the shooting happened was not listed as his address and it wasn't clear why he was there.

Sumter Police Chief Patty Patterson said there were other people inside during the shooting, but she didn't expect them to be charged.

There was no answer Saturday morning at the mobile home police listed as Patrick's address, although neighbor Larry Sigler said he thought Patrick's mother lived there.

Sigler said Patrick didn't seem like someone prone to violence.

County Councilman Charles Edens said he lives just a few blocks away from where the shooting happened and passed the flashing lights of police cars on his way back from trick-or-treating with his 13-year-old daughter, who was upset at the news.

"It's going to put a dampening on Halloween," Eden said. "I would think twice about going to a door that we don't know who lives behind."

This really makes me sick. I was out trick-or-treating with my little boy last night; we had a great time together. I just can't imagine. The family, and the boy all have my prayers. Very sad.

Interrupted a burglary in progress, perhaps?

The part that is blood boiling is how the news is being sanitized to avoid showing a picture of this scumbag.:fire: I did a google news search using a copy and paste of the first paragraph of this story as quoted by the opening poster and EACH ONE refused to show a picture of the murderer (alleged). Why? We all know why.

Since the original poster didn't include a link, I will include a link to just one of the MANY photo-less stories that came up when I did this search http://www.google.com/search?q=By+M...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

This story gives us insight as to the motive of the piece of trash who fires mindlessly through a door at little kids.

Again, I clicked on ALL THE NEWS LINKS on the first page and not one showed a photo :fire:

Perhaps the guy should have still been in jail!:banghead:

I read this stuff so much in the news and I wonder how they all seem to get off so easy, only to kill another innocent person.:scrutiny:

Sick:cuss:

Well hell is coming soon, and it will be riding a pale horse. Many believe it, if things don't change and soon. Money is drying up and so are police powers...So what will be the outcome?:eek:Yep for sure.

:uhoh:

A gun was used to fire approximately 30 rounds through the front door apparently by a convicted felon.

Right, but (hopefully) none of us are convicted felons, and (hopefully) we all know not to fire through front doors at unidentified targets.

I guess my point is that just because something tragic happens with a gun and makes it onto the news, doesn't mean it's on-topic here. If this had been a case of an accidental shooting by a homeowner who was under the impression that he was about to be burglarized/attacked, I can see why it'd be posted. But in this case, a criminal killed a kid. That's not on topic here, since this isn't a forum for criminals, and we certainly don't deal in or advocate killing innocent kids.

Hence, my wondering why it's been posted.

OK, I understand, my bad.:)
I guess my question is why was this guy out of jail to begin with. I realize the question and the answer don't belong here, so I'll just sit and wonder!:fire::barf::mad:

So sad:(
atrick emptied his AK-47, shooting at least 29 times through his front door, walls and windows after hearing the knock, Police Chief Patty Patterson said.

He told police he had been robbed and shot in the past year.

"He wasn't going to be robbed again, and he wasn't going to be shot again," Patterson said Saturday at a news conference.

He emptied his AK into the door when he heard someone knock on it fearing it was a thief:scrutiny:

Not only was it Halloween but how many thieves knock first:uhoh:

The guy simply wanted to kill someone, plan and simple:fire::cuss::mad:

What does this have to do with THR?

Why do we need another link, when the OP already posted the entire story?

Got a problem about people talking about a shockingly disgusting use of "self defense"? Or are you raising your post count? It is gun related and this forum is for all things gun related and someone wanted to discuss it. I don't see why you have to make posts discouraging people from posting because you feel it is not related to THR. If that is the case then the mods need to come in and remove every single post in this forum. Actually its not even the point of how you feel, its the point you just walk in and post, "What does this have to do with THR?" Without even trying to add anything to this thread.

The man hasn't even been brought to court yet and you have already convicted the sob, even though it is pretty evident as to what happened, you don't know the whole truth.

Let me clarify something. I come to this forum because people here hold a higher standard of gun ownership. Or at least they talk like they do here. For some people out there who go out and buy a rifle and have never had any training in it besides what happens on TV, I think it would be healthy for them to see this thread here on how horribly wrong this is. It would also be healthy for any ignorant, outraged, anti's that decide they want to drop by. Instead of seeing nothing, they see this thread and how disgusted we are over it.

I just find your posts extremely irritating. Feel free to clarify any of your viewpoints, they just make no sense to me. Personally if my kid got shot by some lunatic who wanted to have an excuse to shoot someone, I would want it to be talked about, everywhere.

What bugs us Mods and leads to thread closings is the lack of a cocmplete story, and the amount of emotional speculation and arguments which ensue.

Which is why I tend to close these with the comment that when more information is available, feel free to restart a thread.
