You can ship a handgun to yourself everywhere it's legal. If it's not legal for you to have that handgun in NJ then you can't legally ship to yourself. I have a strong feeling it's not legal for anyone to have a handgun in NJ without jumping through MANY hoops.

Don't trust the opinion of anyone on a forum for legal advice. Contact a lawyer and ask them...

Welcome to the forum and good luck.

N.J. gun laws are crazy. Maybe contact the NRA and they can recomend a lawyer who deals with this sort of thing. Good luck and welcome to the high road!

I understand your reluctance to travel into the state of NJ with firearms in the vehicle. However, it is legal for you to do so, as it is legal for you to possess them in your home, without any paperwork or permits - with a few caveats:

- The handguns and magazines must be NJ-legal. That means no magazines over 15 round capacity, and no "assault pistols", which is any pistol that takes a magazine outside the pistol grip, and weighs over 50oz. unloaded. This applies to things like AR-15 pistols, TEC-9's, Broomhandle Mausers, etc.

- The handguns are unloaded, and secured in a case or locked in the trunk. Since your van doesn't have a trunk, closed and fastened cases will suffice. It is STRONGLY recommended that these cases be locked, but not an absolute requirement.

- Once you enter NJ, you are to travel directly to your new home - no stops in between that are not "reasonably necessary under the circumstances". Like most NJ gun laws, no one's really sure what this means. I would advise filling your van's tank, and emptying yours, west of the Delaware.

NJ Statute 2C:39-6e makes it legal for you to transport from one home to another while moving, and to possess within your home. 2C:39-6g specifies the requirements for transportation.

As mentioned previously, NO HOLLOW-POINT AMMUNITION at all. While it is legal for you to possess HP ammo in your home, it is NOT legal for you (specifically, in your circumstance) to transport it. I know, I know... but that's the law.

Please research the above laws for yourself, and then you can make your determination on what you want to do.

This is an interesting video that elaborates on this part of Tom488's post.
