I will be showing my lack of knowledge here, but I have a question regarding the storage of handguns. I have a gun safe which I store some of my guns in, with the dehumidifire, and I keep them with a fine film of gun oil. I also have some handguns in the closet which I also keep oiled, but they are in velvet lined gun cases. Is keeping them in the cases oiled harmful, or should I make more room in the safe and keep them out of cases?

The gun cases can draw moisture, especially if used for range trips and get caught, (small shower without case being under cover). Use those knit gun socks to keep scratches to a minimum while guns are in the safe. Use gun cases for transportation purposes.

Never store a gun in a case.

They are better off in the closet gathering dust where air can circulate around them then in close contact with a lined case where it can't.

What can happen is, the lining wicks off the oil film, and the padding can collect humidity and hold it in contact with the dry steel.
Rust will result.

I much prefer R.I.G. grease & a R.I.G.-Rag for long term protection over any oil.
A lot of oils just don't offer much rust protection, even if you can keep it on the gun.
