Well, today was also the birthday of my older brother. He has never shot a centerfire rifle. He has shot .22 LR and 1 shot of 12 ga. when we were still kids, ages ago. I took him to the range a few years ago almost by force and he was very pleased to shoot grandpa's old Cooey Model 60 bolt-action tube fed .22 S, L, LR again, just like when we were kids, but in a controlled environment and surrounded by adults, which was both different and, in a weird way, pleasant at the same time. He then asked me if centerfire rifles using the same type of action and metallic sights (excellent open sights on that particular rifle after having been filed in secret by an uncle, but that is another story, and sufficient barrel lenght) existed. Very long answer followed and we never talked about it again. I think I should buy him a nice .308 Winchester whith good iron sights (his sight is still good, I only wish) because if someone decides to own only one rifle, it might very well be a .308 and not be a mistake.

I have one hunting rifle.

It's a 308win. I keep thinking I need another, but I know I really don't need one for anything I want to do.

308, in my opinion, is the ultimate do all bore diameter. There are lots of great cases to launch 308 bullets from, and as mentioned above the 308 win is a great sweet spot. I don't have one at the moment, I usually use the 308 predecessor (30-06), but a 308 is never a bad choice.

Lightman, your gesture is kind but I can tell you that most that went get embarrassed when they are thanked. I for one enjoyed the Army and I had a wonderful time; I was in need of a direction and a discipline - the Army instilled that in me to this day. I think that I got the best part of the deal - my excellent marksmanship training, the discipline, the maturity, the fully paid college and the life’s experience. I feel guilty sometimes as I had it made during service and I got paid to do it - the GI Bill and all, I fell like I should be thanking someone for that privilege.

There are 2 rounds that I said I wouldn't likely own because they were too mundane and run of the mill. They're the 308 and the 223.I now have 3 of each, and I love both cartridges.I have a Remington 700VTR 308 that doesn't have the dopey muzzle brake, and the barrel is 24 inches long(Cabela's version). It's the most accurate production rifle I've ever shot.I'm going to paint a new Manners stock for it this weekend. After the stock was bedded, primed and ready for Dura-Coat,I shot a few 1/2 inch groups with it at 100 yards just to make sure the bedding job was well done. The VTR configuration isn't much heavier than a sporter barrel, and for the first few shots,it shoots like a varmint barrel. At 11 pounds loaded for bear,it's a light tactical style setup that is just plain fun to shoot.I also have a custom Model 7 in 308,and it's my favorite hunting rifle out of all of them.Yes,there are rifle cartridges that do some things better, but the list of cartridges that do a lot of things better than the 308 is very small. It's not incredibly powerful,it's not the best choice for 1,000 yards,it doesn't shoot very flat and some will say the 6.5 Creedmoor and some other rounds will beat it for a lot of different things, but the versatility of the 308 is hard to beat.If things went bad today, the two rounds I said I'd never own will be the ones I reach for.
