I'm looking for a pair of ear plugs that amplifies ambient noise while reducing damaging noises. Up to this point I've been using muffs but they are quite uncomfortable and cumbersome to use when shooting a rifle. HAs anyone used this product, Walker's Tactical Game Ear?

I've seen some that are prohibitively expensive (anything much over $250/ear is out of the question). Any other recommendations?

I just got back from the range and was planning on looking for electronic hearing protection myself. Any good recommendations folks?

The wife and I both use Peltor electronic "earmuffs" and like them very much. Ours cost less than the "in-the-ear" hearing protection shown at the link. I just sent a pair of Peltor Tactical 7S earmuffs to my youngest son for his birthday - under $140 including Midway's shipping, handling, insurance charge.

I love the Walkers Game Ear! A friend has one, it's great.

But, I can't see my way to spending that much on one (he gets Cabela's stuff from his credit card company, on the other hand). I find that the set of Remington electronic muffs, while vastly inferior at amplifying noise, is worthwhile.

I was looking at some they have at Wal-Mart for $37...

They're the size of an in-ear hearing aid. I wonder how well they work.

I believe I have that model as well. I can't recollect the name of the company, but I believe its name starts with S. If that is it- comes in a blister pack, sold at Walmart, has little white "cups" and I believe the body is green- it's a great little ear protector and actually magnifies quite well.

Don't forget that the biggest reason to use muffs is to protect the mastoid from conducting sound waves, which you can't protect with plugs alone.

That being said, I have no clue. I've never used electronic ears, but I intend to soon.

Muffs are definitely frustrating. They're fine when shooting handguns, but bring a rifle or shotgun up to your cheek and CLUNK. Then there's the 'low profile' versions but their NRR is around 22. "Wear plugs *and* muffs" they say. C'mon.

The one's pictured look interesting. Harder to lose than the fully in the ear canal versions.

Yeah, I usually double up with plugs + muffs when shooting handguns, especially at an indoor range. With rifles, though, it's a bitch.

1) don't buy big crappy globulous earmuffs. Get the Peltor Shotgunners - That is THE earmuff for competition shooters - rifle guys too. And they've got a version that has speakers too.

2) Don't buy your earmuffs at Bubba's Bargain Bunker. Because he bought a case at Harbor Freight last year, and is trying to unload 'em at a 200% markup. And they suck anyway. Buy the damn Peltor Shotgunners.

3) Wear foam plugs, PROPERLY inserted in the ear canals. If you occasionally need to use a leatherman to remove 'em, they're in just right. Roll 'em and let 'em expand.

Bogie is correct.

NRR 30 plugs properly worn with electronic muffs over them are a very practical solution. Using low profile electronic muffs allow you to shoot shotguns and rifles comfortably.

Remember if your plugs do not go well down in the ear canal you have not properly inserted them. Just as a plug in the sink drain that isn't in properly will leak so will improperly inserted ear plugs "leak" noise.
