Hey,
Has anyone bought one of these budget autos at Walmart yet. I can't seem to find much info on these. Saw them in my local Walmart today. $226 for a semi auto 12ga shotgun bearing the name Hatfield, model appears to be SAS. Barrel stamped with UTAS-USA made in Turkey. 3"chamber. Looks like a milled aluminum receiver and chrome lined barrel, takes screw in chokes. The action seemed a little quirky on the example I looked at, but in all fairness the salesman who was showing me the shotgun said he was the one who put it together, and did not seem to be terribly well versed in firearms. The bolt seemed to have trouble staying in the locked position, but I'm not sure if said salesman forced something together that ought not to have been forced together. Any information on these would be helpful, at $226, if these are halfway decent I think I need one.
Thanks

You have a good start by asking on this or other web site's about this gun.

Rule of thumb is if a new gun has problems from new out of the box, walk away, walk quickly.

I'm a little amused by the name.

"Hatfield."

"Boy, you dun gots ta get a gun that gots th' name of th' famous feudin' family!!"

It seems that someone is wanting to capitalize on the Hatfield name.

The SxS Hatfield shotguns were imported from Turkey and sold as high end guns, and they were. The bad part is the company importing them couldn't make a go of it and stopped.

If you do a internet search for Hatfield shotguns you will have many hits, look at the auction sites, a Hatfield SxS with 20/28 barrels sells for about $3000.

Also Kimber imported the same gun for a while, look up Kimber shotguns at Guns International, they are not cheap.

After doing some digging, looks like this is most likely manufactured by Khan. Has a very similar look to some of their models, as well as Tristar. Not sure of its worth the gamble

I have no ide where you are located, area does affect prices of used guns.

If you are looking to add what you already own there are many better choice's for you.

Your post says semi-auto, so why not look at other make's and models.

khan's folding 410 single is a handy little gem.

I saw one of the single shots at my local walmart for $99. They had 12, 20 and .410 models. If these are indeed Khans I will be picking up a .410. Hope someone has more info on these.

These are made by UTAS and imported by Hatfield. The SA is a field gun with low luster/satin finishes. After 80 rounds of promotion low brass Winchester target loads last Monday, I have only had 2 misfires. Both shells fired on the second go round. No issues with loading or extraction/ejection. The magazine stop is stiff and ate my finger loading it, but it is getting better. This gun requires a break-in period!

Hatfield states the action is "inertia/gas assisted system" it is not. It is gas operated and comes with both a light and heavy piston. Unlike most SA, the operating spring is behind the bolt as with the CZ 9xx design. What problems it will have in the future or how long it will hold up I don't know, one guy on the web says he has 4 in a shooting school with 1500 rds each and no problems. At his point I wouldn't stake my life on it, but as a field gun subject to scratching and abuse or as a loaner, no problem for $226. It's prettier than a Maverick!

The problem with these off-brand imports from places like Turkey is that the US company may stop importing them next month or next year if they aren't making enough profit or the Turkish company decides to sell to another importer. And then you have an orphan and won't be able to get parts or much support if it breaks. Hatfield used to import Huglu shotguns but that ended when CZ got the rights to import Huglus.

I have no experience with the semi autos, but I bought both a 12 and a 20 gauge single shot Hatfield from Walmart. I will be posting the review on them as soon as I have a moment.

I'm hoping that it will help give a little more depth of what you may be expecting from a Hatfield shotgun.

Pretty sure these are the same as the Kahn shotguns talked about above. They have all the same features and look exactly the same. I plan to pick up the .410 and the .20 (already have an NEF 12 Ga.). A $250 auto sounds nice but would like to learn more about them.

I've also heard about people finding Pardner pumps at Wally World sub-$100.

My wife bought me a Hatfield 12ga auto shotgun for Christmas, Right out of the box this gun is defective. The bolt will not cycle, when you pull it back it locks and will not return. I took the gun apart to see if maybe some debris or packing might have been stuck in the trigger assembly and found nothing. I did notice the fit and finish of the plastic trigger assembly looks very poor. I have tried to call the company and there recording answers utas I have left messages twice now starting 12-20 at 8am ctz and have not had a return call. I have learned in the past not to buy a firearm from wally world so I can't say I didn't know better. Will keep you posted on how this turns out.

On a semi auto shotgun the bolt locks back after the last shot is fired. If you just pull the bolt back when the gun is empty there is a little button by the trigger guard that you must push first to make the bolt lock back. What happens when you push the bolt release button?

Can't really say more than that unless you have shells in the gun and are cycling the bolt with live rounds, then you probably have a problem.

For the price on these guns you can't expect hand fitted perfection.

Like I said when the bolt is pulled back it locks in place and will not return. The button for the bolt release becomes recessed into the housing and will not come out until the trigger assembly is removed at which time the bolt will return to the closed position. I own 4 automatic shotguns and was just looking for a cheap gun that I could loan out to friends that want to hunt with me.

After going through and buying both a 12 and a 20 gauge single shot, I urge anyone considering a hatfield shotgun to treat them like you would when buying a used gun. I have found several defects while i was looking, like barrels that were bent slightly, actions that were tough to manipulate, and poorly fitted stocks. There are quite a few serviceable guns, but just make sure to pick through these very carefully.

A buddy of mine bought one a few months back and told me last week it has ran perfect for him.
I did ask if he'd shot any light loads with it and he said he had not. He's probably just shot buck shot and whatever he duck hunts with, but no low brass.

Anyone know what pistol grip butt-stock and extension tube kit would be compatible with the 12ga. semi auto Hatfield

I said I would keep you people posted on my response from Hatfield and my defective shotgun. They sent me a prepaid return ticket for UPS. I sent it back and they did a 6 day turn around and the gun now works great. Out of 100 rounds clay's it jammed 2 times. Very satisfied.

The only hand fitted self-loading shotgun I'm aware of is Italian Cosmi. While one does not need to spend many thousands for hand assembly and finishing there is only so much that can be produced to very low price point.

Cosmi is to semi-auto shotgun what Patek Phillipe is to a wrist watch. I agree expecting quality of execution for $226 is "pipe dream" never to be realized. It is sort of like expecting real chicken meat in fast food "chicken" nuggets that cost couple of dollars to buy.
