When I start seeing .........16 gauge ...........shotguns voted "gun of the year" I start seeing some damn DESPERATE advertising for useless guns.

Although I cut my teeth on a 16, I also cut my teeth on running out of ammo in the boondocks and facing a 30 mile....or more...drive to find some.


And almost anything that Walther and S&W collaborate on.
And .500 S&W?
.44 Mag is more than 98% of shooters can handle with any accuracy.

Times sure have changed.

I still carry a .38 spl on my CCW even though I....know.....a can of Mace has more muzzle energy.

Since guns last, on the average, a bazillion years, in order to sell a new piece they gotta sell the benefits. Why should you buy another gun when the ones you already have will outlast you, and the next generation, and the next generation ...
 
I don't see anything wrong with more power, or lighter frames, or even re-discovering the virtues of the 16 ga. More options, more choices, the better.
 
With the greying of America, a lot of the older shotgunners are finding out they can't handle the 12 gauges anymore. I know one guy that destroyed his shoulder so bad he's forced to use a .410 to plink his clays.

As far as the accuracy of anything bigger than a .44 mag, all you have to do is line the sights up just like any other firearm. There isn't that much of a difference between learning to shoot a magnum than a .22 except one has to hold tighter than the other.

My understanding of the .500 Smith and Wesson is that it has less recoil than the .454 Casulls.
 
My Dad always loved a 16 gauge. He thought 12 was too much for him and 20 was not enough. 16 splits the difference nicely. However, he also preferred the Browning Sweet 16 to the modern versions. In my opinion, Walther made a mistake collaborating with S&W.
 
At the time the 16 ga was the premier size in America, the guns were scaled to the gauge. The 16 bore was 1/3 smaller than the 12; the 20 was yet smaller; etc. During the 60s or 70s they began to build what 16s they did on the 12 ga frame. Spoiled the whole lighter handier thing. Look at an old Browning Sweet 16 Autoloader. Truly a nice pkg. If they return to the scaled sizes it might be a good thing.

Another troublous thing was the old 16 guns usually shot 2 9/16" shells. Not exactly modern.
 
What? Now I have to pass your proficiency test before I can own a big bore handgun? First I have to ask the government's permission and then yours? Why? Because you say so? Fat chance. I'll buy what I like.

And next time buy enough ammo before you go hunting and you won't have to drive 30 miles. Might put you in a better mood, too. :)

Not everyone buys a gun/car/computer for purely practical reasons.

Some of us like having the biggest/fastest/newest, etc.

If we start limiting the market based on need, we are toast.
 
ban the 500 thats too much gun
ban the 12 thats too much gun.........

you know an interchangeable barrel between 16 an 12 would be nice when shootin with the wife, kid, father with osteoporosis who still likes them ol boom sticks

Then put quotes around where I said you should be TESTED to buy a gun.

I don't care WHAT you buy, but .....I .....will put money on 2 out of 100 of the GENERAL PUBLIC WHO BUYS 44 mag being able to put 6 rounds in the black ...........offhand..............at 25 yards.

Nope, most of us are just fine...even the 98% of us not gifted with 44mag accuracy:rolleyes:

Possibly the rest were being satirical also and it is I who misinterpreted. Sorry to all who were "tongue in cheeking."
 
I must admit that there is too much thunder and smoke from the manufacturers these days. The market is getting tougher for them, esp. the market for handguns. They have to come up with some reason for you to buy a new firearm instead of the countless millions of used but perfectly functional firearms floating around out there.
