This topic pops up from time to time. You get a number of people who think that if you tell someone, "no, you shouldn't own a gun," then you are violating his rights. This isn't true anymore than telling someone to "shut up" is a violation of their rights. I've told several people they should not talk. I've told several people they should not own a gun. And in no situation did I violate a right. I am not the government. I am not a law.

Yes, I have told a few people. One of them while in the Military 
He was doing his "initial" M9 qualification, target at 10 yds... Shot the deck of the ship. We had to tell him that "weapons just aren't for you, stick to the radars" He was a fire control technician working on the Spy radar system...
One of the people I refused to help with weapons got very angry, but what can you do? I was afraid he'd shoot himself by looking down the barrel and squeezing the trigger to see what happened.

I've told two students that they weren't ready to have a gun. In both cases because they told me they refused to buy ammunition because they just couldn't shoot anyone.
That does bring back a memory, though. We were visiting friends in an Indian village in Northern Arizons once, back in '47 or 48. The kids were sent out with one of the old men to do some plinking with our .22s. I offered to let the old man shoot my rifle and he refused. When I asked him why, he said, "When I was a young man, they took my spear away from me. They said they couldn't afford to keep replacing my horse."

Really? So they wanted to scare people away with their gun? Wow.
My roommate was asking to go to the shooting range, but this kid is so incompetent at life that he'd probably turn around and point the gun at people and think it's funny. I don't let him drive my car, and I sure as hell won't let him be around me with deadly weapons.

my instructor mentioned he had failed someone because when it was time for double tap target work the guy yelled bonzai and proceeded to miss the target with a full magazine. A little off, and a lot trigger happy not a good combination. He was denied his safety course, but he probably just went and took it somewhere else.

"This reminds of when I worked in photofinishing. With color photoprinting you can not use any light at all or else the paper will fog. The darkroom has to be pitch black. They would roll these big metal magazines through a lightproof box to you and you would pull out this big roll of printed photopaper that weighed around 30lbs and load it into one of 16 slots behind the developing tanks on the Gretag machines.
The department I was thrown into had a rather high washout rate. It was high-volume production. You can not train for a job like that.
A very few persons could fly through that darkroom like they had bat sonar. Their visual and spatial skills were that good.
Just about everyone else would be too timid for the work volume demand or come out of there looking as if they had just gotten into a fight.
It was kind of funny. Either you can or you can't.
Since we are talking about life threatening pursuits. Then I would not have a problem telling someone that flying or firearms aren't for them.

I have more than once told someone No you shouldnt do this. Some actually understand. I was instructing at Fort Eustis VA, and had a soldier try to "time" a 30mm machine gun with a 4lb non-sparking hammer. I told him no. He was smart as could be but didnt have a mechinical bone in his body. The thought of him with a weapon makes me understand how someone could shoot themself by accident.
