HD Shotgun vs AR

Yes they are loud but the chance you’ll ever need to fire it are very very low.
But if you do....

The likelihood of occurrence is not relevant to the analysis of the consequences.

I don't own an AR or a shotgun. My go to HD guns are my Ruger P95 nightstand gun. I also have my CX4 in 9mm nearby. The CX4 is short, light, very handy and much quieter than a 9mm pistol. It's handy enough that my elderly mother can use it without issue.

If necessary I could press my Marlin 1894 in 357 into service. I'd feel very confident using it in an emergency.

The CX4 is a very sweet little carbine! I liked mine a lot but after having my Scorpion with the SB Tactical brace for a year or two I wound up selling the Storm. My CX4 had an abominable trigger but despite that it was still very easy to shoot well. I had it for years and never had so much as a single hiccup with it. Mags are cheap and plentiful, too.

That just aint right. You need to work on correcting that.

I know. Its a work in progress. I was planning to get an AR when I spotted the 1894. I still need to get the AR (especially with the political climate) but I also now need a revolver to go with the 1894.

Its a vicious cycle

We live in a remote location in the Chattahoochee NF, children are grown except for the two Pitts. ;) Nearest neighbor is about a half mile away.

I have an AR or AK and a 1911-A1 alongside the bed.
The wife has a hammerless S&W snub nose.

I have five ARs. I would have gone with the 1894 as well. :D

For HD my service weapon (Glock 35) lives on my bedside table when I'm home. However, if I have time I'm grabbing one of my ARs.

I'm not convinced that buckshot (00 Especially) at extreme close ranges won't penetrate more walls than something like a .223 Gold Dot.

That said I'm willing to bet the 62 gr Gold Dots out of Mom's M4 and the #3 Buckshot out of her Remington 1100 LT 20 ga are far more effective than the .38 Special WC she carries in her 3" SP101.

If you live in an area where they demonize black guns just get something like a Remington 7400 in .243 and use Remington Core-Lokt or Federal Ballistic Tip.

It is for me. I could get killed by a piece of falling space trash but I’m not going to build a bunker to protect me from it. I don’t think it matters much if you chose an AR or shotgun and the chances your ears will be exposed to either are slim. Pick what you like better and practice a lot.

In one of his YouTube videos, Clint Smith says that handguns make holes in people, rifles make holes through people, and shotguns rip chunks out of people. There's much to be said for a 20 gauge semi-auto or pump shotgun, with a barrel of minimum legal length, loaded with buckshot smaller than 00.

I agree. This is in the closet loaded with 2 3/4" Remington 20 pellet #3 buckshot. 20" cylinder choke and the stock has been shortened 1 1/2" including the added recoil pad.

To repeat what I said before, shoot your handgun, your shotgun and your AR in a class and competition and decide which works for you in a SD situation.

Yes.

And part of deciding is to consider how you will get to the gun in such a situation.

t is for me.
Only to the extent that the consequences (permanent noise-induced hearing loss) depend upon cumulative exposure.

Good call.

I don’t think it matters much if you chose an AR or shotgun...
I don't know. What are the respective sound pressure levels?

...the chances your ears will be exposed to either are slim.
the sound pressure is relevant when it is experienced, regardless of the likelihood that it will be.

That's a fundamental tenet of risk management.

Gee, Dad fought in WWII, enduring shooting rifles, SMG’s, MG’s (American and German), the 37mm cannon on his armored car, and artillery. His hearing seemed fine in his 80’s...
Either ears have changed, or men have.

Please research the large literature of hearing damage from gunshots before drawing a conclusion from an anecdote. Sigh, why do we go through this every time we caution about ear damage. Some people smoked three packs a day and never got cancer. So, does that mean you should?

That's possible, but it would be a rare outlier.

And "seemed fine" is not a reliable diagnosis.

Either ears have changed, or men have.
What on Earth does that mean?

Whatever it means, why would anyone conclude that?

Over the years the most requested item from my customers is a similar way to store an AR-15. It use to be a shotgun, but now more requests for a rifle or even a PCC/PDW size gun. Next quarter I hope to finally have this ready for those wanting a quick access storage method for a long gun that will also be very secure with similar construction as my handgun safes.

Initial size is meant to hold up to an AR-15 with a drum or 30 round magazine and optic. The size is 40L x 12.5"H x 6"W. The second version will be a 30"L version for shorter models. Trying to offer it in 7GA (we'll see on pricing soon) with the same Simplex lock and our exclusive key (In&Out) lock that allows you to deadbolt the push button lock for extra security when you are away.

This is the only pic I have so far and was just used to update customers recently that subscribe to my newsletter. You can see the door will be hinged on the long side and allow to mount any way you like, even standing on it's end and bolted to a wall stud. The little handle you see is just temporary and used to test the latching mechanism without the lock installed.

That would fit nicely under a bed.
I like it.

Captain James Burt would disagree with you. He was almost completely deaf when he passed.

I didn’t follow the reference to see the details of measurement but this indicates they’re pretty similar but highly dependent on barrel length. A long barrel shotgun is quieter than a short barreled rifle and vice versa.

Noise goes up as barrel length goes down so it’s a trade off. Handy vs noisy. I chose both with a short barrel rifle and a short suppressor.

I have an old West rig set up similar to how some of y'all have dedicated chest rigs with mags for y'all's AK or AR. It holds 3 speedloaders and my 629 with .44 spl loads from Sig V crown. My wife is barely into guns so she only wants to use her shield 9mm which is better than nothing. I have been wing shooting and hunting mainly with a shotgun for 10 years and was in Comms in the Army I was issued an M500 when I deployed only M16 experience came from Basic really. I have a 12 ga loaded with reduced recoil 00 buck that is the first go to. My BIL lives with us he's 15 he has a .22 lever action, a 12 ga Maverick, and a .30 Carbine at his disposal. He has the carbine near him at night with a couple of mags. I haven't even had an AR in many a moon but what the hell I can get some 350 PSA thing and call it a day.

I am experimenting with this load. Needs a 1:7 or it will keyhole a bit too early. Cycles fine out of my 16 inch midlength PSA pencil barrel. Groups about 3 1/2 inches for ten shots with irons at 50 yards before they start to go sideways.
