The chairman of the Republican party, Michael Steele, had this to say about gun ownership:

Q: Should people have access to buy assault weapons?

A: Society should draw lines. What do you need an assault weapon for, if you're going hunting? That's overkill. But I don't think that means you go to a total ban for those who want to use gun for skeet shooting or hunting or things like that But what's the point of passing gun laws if we're not going to enforce them? If you want to talk about gun control, that's where you need to start. We've got 300 gun laws on the books right now. At the end of the day, it's about how we enforce the law.

This was on the Republican site, but has been taken down. To see a header, look here:

Can anyone find the actual interview cached somewhere?

Michael Steele is an embarrassment. The fact that he's still the chairman says a lot about the GOP party elite, and why the party has little support from the very people it claims to represent.

People need to see beyond this left right paradigm. At this point the elite are selling us out. By us I mean the middle class Americans. The reason we have the right own guns is to protect ourselves from an overzealous guberment. The 2nd amendment has nothing to do with self defense or even hunting. I am new to the gun world, so I can only assume that the NRA has been one of those false front organizations that is really selling us out. Lennin said--the best way to control the opposition is to lead it. Look around.

...action? We need to remind our Congressmen LOUDLY that they work for US...we don't exist to serve THEM...the elite are widening the gap and chipping away at the middle class...it's kinda like a wedding: "Speak NOW or forever hold your peace!!!"

This is a lie.

I have been told here multiple times that all Republicans love all guns automatically, and all Democrats hate guns automatically.

Yea you shouldn't equate republican vs. Democrat with pro gun and anti gun. The republican candidates play to us as voters. But many Democrats got in this past election because they had good ratings from the NRA. Michael Steele is just another ignorant politician who believes the PR from the anti-gunners and has never sat and read any of the material from our founding fathers or supreme court rulings about the intention of the 2nd Amendment, or for that matter, any history in general. I bet he wails at guitar hero though.

This will probably get closed soon....no politics at THR..I got pointed for bringing up how my senator voted concerning a gun bill, an what I thought of it.....its a fine line, best to put guns an politics on a sig line.

yep, no random political whining here

of course, if you want to DO SOMETHING instead of just grousing about it, we strongly encourage you to start a thread in Activism. put a link in your signature to your thread in activism to attract more attention to your plan for action
