Help from the pros?

I would go for a lee breechlock challenger kit for about $100. There are other things you will want and for the price of the unit you are looking at you can buy them. These include calipers, vibratory cleaner, dies, etc. A single stage is a better first press and you can use if for a very long time.
 
I'd like to start reloading, starting cheap, maybe later on, upgrading to another press.

Most here will recommend you start with a single stage press. Any O-ring type press will do. Lee press is as cheap as you can get, but still get quality.

Later on, if you want to upgrade to a progressive, look around then.

I do start shooters new to reloading out on Pro 1000 with close supervision, but I would not recommend it to new reloaders who is not mechanically inclined or can patiently follow directions to troubleshoot problems.

Definitely would NOT start with a Loadmaster. Check out the reviews at MidwayUSA.com & you'll see why I would not go there. I'm not a Lee basher, in fact that's all I have on my bench.

I would start a newbie off with a Lee 4 Hole Turret Press Kit.

That way you can remove the auto indexer rod to begin like a single stage, yet once you get the hang of it, pop the rod back in & you get the speed of a turret press.

I agree. I would recommend the Lee classic turret kit if you plan on loading a lot of pistol. You can get that kit for around $200 at www.kempfgunshop.com. You can use it as a single stage press and when you get comfortable with reloading ( 2 to 3 weeks ) you can add the auto indexing rod and go from 50 rounds per hour to around 200 per hour.

In order to say much inteligently we need to know what you will be loading for and how much per week you might expect to shoot. And at what targets - game or paper, etc.
 
Lee single stage kit, or the Lee Turret press kit. Then buy a couple of things like a good dial caliper.

Minimum to buy:

Press (with priming capability)
Dies/Shell Holder
Scale
Dial Caliper
Reloading Manual

Very nice to have:

Powder measure
Hand primer

What is cool to have:

Hah, you name it, someone here has it...

Because that is the deluxe kit. It will make just as good ammo as the rest but you will spend a lot of time after picking spent primers up from the bench and floor. The classic turret has a great spent primer disposal. The classic also has a lot of other upgrades that are a plus over the deluxe.
