Help me find a new 1911

Ok, so I'm selling my Taurus PT1911...first 1911 I ever owned
BUT, its time for an upgrade. I'm looking for:

8 round mag capacity because I'd hate to throw away all those extra Chip McCormack 8 rounders.... (saw a similar thread regarding 8 round mag capacities...but I didn't see too much on there that would help me out). This is a tough task!

Reliability is of HUGE importance to me, I mean right outta the box I wanna be albe to send 500 rnds without a single malfunction. I'd really have loved a Kimber Custom II or Springfield (TRP, perhaps) (or something similar), but can only seem to find them in 7 rnd mag cap. If anyone has seen or knows different, link me!!! And by the way, the 7 round capacity is not a deal breaker....I just feel more comfortable better knowing theres another round in there if I ever need it.

Tactical rail for accessories because...well, they're fun

Also, I need an ambidextious thumb safety because I do better shooting lefty. I'm right handed, so its not absolutely necessary, but I'd prefer it.

and finally, price. I expect to sell the Taurus for about $500 +/-, and then I could throw another $700 on top of that...soooooo, I've got about a $1200 budget, give or take. Willing to spend more for the right pistol, though.

Colt XSE Rail Gun.

Any full size frame 1911 will take those 8 round mags.

8 round mags work in all full size 1911's you can use either . I stay with my 7 round as that the way the mag was designed. I have a colt 8 rounder wasn't reliable
Ambi safety can be installed by any good smith . You can do it if you can follow directions .

Good luck on finding a dealer who will give you 500 for a Taurus. I say 350 to 400 maybe Face to face sell might get 500

STI make some of the finest 1911s at any price, in my experience. I own Colt, Para, SIG, S&W, Springfield and STI, If I could only own one, STI. It has the best stock trigger, it's Wilson-Nowlin ramped barrel will eat anything, great sights, they are perfectly reliable and the most accurate pistols I own. They can be had with either Novak or Bomar target sights, most have adjustable but can be ordered with either, if you can wait a while. In order of personal preference STI (SIG & S&W tie), Springfield, Colt Series 70, and still working on the Para Ordnance. Just an idea of what a PT1911 currently goes for...........
I would place it for sale locally or on a site like gunbroker.com if you want to try and get around what a new one would cost.

Stick with one of the "Big Three," Colt, Kimber or Sprinfield. Don't believe all the negative hype you read in various forums about Kimber. My TLE II (and thousands of other Kimbers) have been just as reliable as any other manufacturer. Lots of good suggestions in the posts above. Good luck with your search!

Les Baer has railed pistols that'll meet your reliability requirements. Just special order one with an ambi safety.

I can't honestly say I've ever seen a K or S go 500 without a failure out of the box.
I'd pitch the Chip mags anyway.

If you can do without the rail, look towards a DW V or Heritage. A bit closer to your price range as well.

Be aware that a 1911 with a light rail will be a PITA to find not only a holster for, but a holster in lefty will be nigh on impossible to find for it. I am left handed and have a bunch of 1911s and have had a hard time finding holsters except for something I have to order off the net.

Phamilyman please allow me to ask you whats wrong with your PT 1911? it come equipped with everything in your criteria.
Most high dollar 1911 will need at least 500 rounds to break in and most come with plastic MSH and MIM internals.
unless you have a PT 1911 that was assembled on a week end and the factory can't make it right.
If your PT1911 is black and does not have a rail with the extra $700.00 I would buy another PT 1911 in stainless with the rails then sell the one you have and buy ammo.
The Taurus PT1911 has a good track record after 7 years and for those that bought them in 2006 if they were to sell them used today they would make a profit of about $200.00 all they can do is appreciate in value, I can easily see them selling for $900.00 in a couple years

Crossbeed & Ravens Concealment are the way to go for custom railed 1911's.

If they don't fit perfect, you can adjust them with a heat gun. I usually have to adjust all of mine for my custom slide stop and thumb safeties.
