Help me out of a love triangle

Hi folks. Just looking for some opinions on a situation I am considering. I have three 45ACP pistols: a Springfiled MilSpec, a Glock 21 and a Ruger P90. I really enjoy shooting all three of them and admire the different qualities that each one has. Even though they are quite different I shoot them all fairly well and they all feel comfortable to me. All three have been very reliable so far.

My thought is that I should master one of them and become very proficient with one of them so using it will be second nature if I ever have to use it, God forbid. They each have a different manual of arms - single action (1911), striker fired (Glock), and SA/DA (Ruger). So I'm thinking I should pick one system, stick with it and really master it at the range.

Which would you pick and why? Of the three, which would you personally consider the most durable and reliable? Any reason that one type of action is best, in your view? Combat accuracy is fine with me, so extreem accuracy isn't really on my list of qualifications.

Any help out of my "love triangle" would be appreciated!
 
Glock safe action... not only for ease of use, but also for ease of maintenance! No hand fit complexity of parts to ensure years of reliable cycling.

If JMB were alive... he'd carry a Glock! :D
 
I would have to vote for the Glock too. It is ultimately the simplest to operate, and very reliable with a bullet shape that it likes. I prefer the 1911 for just about everything, but have to give the Glock the nod when it is serious. Fast accurate shooting with the Glock is just as easy as a carryable 1911 too.
 
Definitely the Glock!

You get 14 rounds versus 8 in the others. The Glock is the simplest and most reliable of the three by several orders of magnitude.

It doesn't have those ridiculous manual safeties. And has been mentioned, the Glock is the most popular police handgun in the country, giving you cover for liability.

More police officers carry Glocks than any other handgun. That speaks for itself.
 
Another vote for the Glock. Although Glocks are by no means my favorite recreational pistol I believe when it comes to a self defense weapon, the simpler the better. As a civilian (non LE), chances are that if you ever do need to use a gun for defense it will be at once and with very little warning, particularly if you are awoken in the middle of the night from a sound sleep. It seems to me that the last thing you would want to have to think about are small safeties and such when your motor skills aren't at 100%. Mike
 
A man that has mastered the 1911 can master any of the others with little additional effort. The reverse is not necessarily true.
 
Doesn't matter.
Clean and oil any two and put them up.
Shoot the other exclusively for a year. You will get more than fairly good with it.
You can then transition to one of the others in a couple of weeks' frequent practice. That is what I do. Not always the same gun, but I shoot the same action type in competition and carry for a year at a time.
 
The one that feels the best to you. Do a little testing at the range work it down to two, then another day work with those two and see which feels best. For me I already know its the 1911.
 
My suggestion. Set all three guns UNLOADED by your bed. Then have a neighbor kick in your door at 3:00 AM while screaming thet he is about to blow your :cuss: head off. Whichever gun you grab, carry that one.

OK, here's my take:

Go to the range with a friend and a stopwatch. Fire strings with all three guns. Put three rounds into a target from holster at 21 feet. Pick the gun that will allow you to get consistent "A" zone hits with 3 rounds in the least time from the holster.

Work with that gun for 6 months. Then switch to the next best, and so on. In 18 months, you should be very proficient with all 3, provided you shoot at least once every two weeks.
 
I carry a Glock 17. In 45 cal I would go w/ the 1911. Why because I want a 1911 but there too expensive to shoot. Also my Glock is on the bubble again. I've found that to shoot the Glock the best I need to use the least amount of trigger finger. Sometimes I use so little trigger finger that I don't get enough of the trigger safety to pull the trigger safety into the trigger & the pistol wont fire. It's like forgetting to take off the external safety on other pistols. The external safety on the 1911 is in the best place of any pistol w/ an external safety. I've only shot a 1911 once. I fondle em every now then. Every time I pick 1 my thumb goes on the safety naturally. In fact the first time I shot the 1911 (range Colt 91A1). I shot it better than my Glock 17 (9mm).

OK, I'll take a different approach. Keep em all, keep shooting them all, and decide which one you want to grab at night. You can become profecient with three handguns, it's not too many. I would want to know them all inside and out, backward and foreward, to the point I could wake out of a dead sleep, feel the gun and know instintively what I have at hand.

Now, for the short term, pick the gun you feel most comfortable with and decide that is the gun to use!

Example: I have spent so much time with my shotguns and rifles over the years, you could pick up any of my shotguns or rifles, hand one to me, and blindfolded I could tell you what you handed me instantly. I don't have to fumble for safety's, etc., it's all instinctive.

One of my goals to become this way with handguns I have, and ones I plan to buy. It takes a while but it's fun getting that way!:D
