I use the kind Hickok45 uses. Had a hearing test not long ago. It came back normal. Loudest guns i shoot are my 30.06 and Mosin Nagant. And the range has a roof over it.

GE-Mini_Gun, do you have any website addresses for these ear plugs?

Thanks!

Regardless, muffs over plugs provides the most protection since you can add that extra 5dB for the muffs to the NRR of the plugs. The higher the NRR, the greater your protection.

30-33 NRR is where it tops out for reliable products.
Buy hearing pro from one of the industrial manufacturers. They maintain a QA program and testing and they arent lying to you to sell product. 3M, Howard Leight (owned by 3M), Sordin, Peltor,

From their website

Professional lab custom molded ear plugs can potentially last for years with proper cleaning and storage.
This is true. I've worn audiologist made, custom fit ear plugs since the mid-1980's. I'm only on my second set, and the current ones are nearly 20 years old.

I don't think they provide the noise reduction of perfectly inserted foam plugs, but the custom fit plugs are easier and faster to insert, they fit flush with your ear and won't interfere with muffs, and the custom plugs can easily be cleaned.

If you're interested in this type of product, check with your audiologist.

Thanks JTQ, but if the good foam plugs are better at reducing noise, I'll stick with them.

If sound deadening is the deciding factor, muffs are significantly better than foam plugs.

I'm not going back to foam plugs unless I have to. The comfort, and convenience of custom fit plugs significantly outweigh the minor advantage the foam plugs provide in sound deadening, at least for me.

Cheap foam plugs, with electronic muffs over them.

I can tune the plugs by pulling them out a little, so that the muffs volume level can be heard better. Or keep them fully in for comm free Zen. One of the perks of this is, I can safely take my muffs off, and relax when away from a live firing line. I hate wearing those for all day.

The trick to plugs is you have to reach behind your head with your free arm and pull your ear back so your ear canal opens up completely so they go in nice and fully. Shoveing them in makes them uncomfortable. Extra points if you say "I'm a tea pot" every time you execute this maneuver.
