Hello THR community,

I have what I hope to be a simple question...

I've gotta renew my CPL to keep the state of Michigan happy and I understand how to do this, except one thing.... The training section?

I shoot my handgun every other weekend in my backyard (very rural and 100% legal where I live), does this constitute as training or do I have to retake a sit down NRA class and shooting at a range?

Thanks for your time and thoughts,
Ron

There is nothing in the law stating that your one hour of firing must be at a formal, public firing range. Were it me, I would consider backyard shooting to have been done at my own 'private range,' and sign the certification with a clear conscience. I believe the intent is to make sure you remain familiar with the safe operation of your firearm, which you should be able to clearly demonstrate.

There is no requirement to submit 'proof' of the range time (such as receipts) or of the review of your CPL course materials (such as a quiz.) You are on your honor that you have done so.

If it really bothers you, you can simply go to an indoor or outdoor range for the required one hour. You do not need to sit through a complete CPL course again.

John pretty much covered it all. I just renewed mine and I decided to re-take the CPL course again. I did that because: 1) I wanted to see if any of the legal information had changed; 2) I really liked the quality and instructors of the course; and 3) the course was relatively inexpensive. As John says, I did not have to do that and could have, in very good conscience signed the form. And next time, I will probably just sign the form.

Thank you so much guys, I didn't know if I was missing something.

I feel without a doubt my training goes beyond most any CPL / weapons manipulation class.

Your answers are much appreciated,
Ron
