Hey everyone, we need a little help here. Florida is in a battle to open up some of our colleges to LEGAL CCW holders. Of course Everytown for Gun Ignorance is making a stand here as well and fighting us under threat of "angry mob-ness".

Please help by shooting an email to some of our House Committee members. Here is a list of the next committee bringing this action. It is the members of the Higher Education committee:. Rene Plasencia has already made public his support for this bill. Here are the other emails:

Suggested email Subject: SUPPORT HB-4005 Rights shouldn't end on Campus

Sample Body:

Dear representative,

The US Department of Education reported 392 forcible felonies on Florida Campuses in 2013, under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Higher Education Opportunity Act. Forcible felonies reported include homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, and arson. The number does not include forcible felonies occurring in off-campus college housing or in the surrounding neighborhoods.

This is about licensed adults, responsibly protecting themselves on campus, just as they do off campus, and over a quarter century of statistics from the Licensing Department of DOACS proves their responsibility as a group.

Please support HB 4005.

Thank you everyone! Anti-gunners want you to think that this bill will allow college drunken parties with kids shooting up the sky like in a movie (where they usually get all their firearm information). But the fact is staff, workers, faculty and students over 21 make up 1/3rd of the colleges. Also students who are 21 and over are usually there for advanced degrees and/or going to night classes.

*** ALSO YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A FL RESIDENT TO WRITE AN EMAIL ***

The reason is a person can be thinking about going to a college in Florida, or your child may, knowing a campus allows CCW would be a big positive.

Florida Campus Carry ....

I'm not sure if this new post is needed as several recent Florida legal/political posts have been merged.
I agree 100% that Florida residents & other 2A supporters need to support the NRA/ILA & the Florida Sportsmans Group to change both the college/campus carry laws & the state mandated evac bill.

The shooting incident at Daytona Beach's Bethune Cookman University didn't help things but more CCW holders & gun owners need to contact the elected officials.

Rusty
PS; As a aside, I find it interesting how UCF(University of Central Florida) police chief Richard Beary is against the campus carry/gun laws but his brother Kevin, was the long time elected sheriff of Orange County FL. Kevin Beary was once named LE Officer of the Year by the NRA.
Richard Beary is also the elected head of the powerful IACP group(Intl Chiefs of Police). www.IACP.org

Thanks for the links. I was a student the last go around we have, and am heartened to see this one is gaining traction. I think the focus this time on protecting women is much more receptive than the last time when lawmakers kept trying to steer the discussion towards preventing school shootings. This is closer to the reason we want it, for everyday self defense, and plays better with the public.

update: Florida SB176 ....

I just checked www.Myfloridahouse.gov & it looks like Florida SB176 passed. :D
The information says the new bill could be a law/statue 07/01/2015.
This new change will permit Florida CCW/W license holders over 21 years old to carry firearms concealed on university or FL college campus locations.

Rusty

Clarification ....

The new bill allowing CCW on Florida college/university property will be voted on by the FL Senate. If that passes then the Gov, Rick Scott(R-Florida) can sign the bill into law. It would take effect 07/01/2015.
