Help with found gun/ammo

I have similar situations. My Uncle gave me his last gun, a Charter Arms Pathfinder .22. He had kept it stashed in the assisted living apartment for some time, but decided he was declining and not able to defend the place any longer.
I have my Mother's .22-32 Kit Gun. I don't think Dad ever got her out to shoot it, its six rounds are in the box.
Dad sold the sawn off Colt Police Positive Special .32-20 he carried to defend against streetcar and bus robbers after he retired. It wasn't a whole lot of gun but it would have been a good memento of him and a bygone day when crooks were less tolerated.

We dated the gun on Colts website we were just curious about the store on the ammo because neither of us had ever heard of it around here. I will have him look for a receipt. The conundrum is grandpa not being a gun person, not ever talking about guns, etc just shows up 100yo with this gun. I’d like to know how they missed it when they moved him and cleaned out his apartment. Here is a pic of the gun. View attachment 1256327
That's a nice Mustang Plus II. Have one myself.

If a cop.friend runs a serial number through NCiC they're looking at a 5 year felony for doing that.
Locally, stolen property including guns are in the local stolen property lists. Stolen guns are or should be forwarded to the National Crime Information Center but NCIC is not the only stolen property checklist. Yes there are restrictions on accessing NCIC.

No they aren't.

Most states have a serial number check. FL does.

I don't know about most states but if you run the gun through the data base in FL you only get hits on guns stolen in FL. Thats all legal. If the gun was stolen in NJ (no state data base on stolen guns) it would have been entered in NCIC, a Federal database.

Unofficial use of NCIC by a "cop buddy" can find him or her charged with a felony. I know of someone convicted of unofficial use of NCIC.

All of this is fine, but how is anyone supposed to be able to check that a gun they buy has not been used in a crime? Sell to a dealer, do they check?

The gun being used in a crime and being reported stolen are 2 different things.

No one knows if a gun was used in a crime until its run through ballistics. If a gun wasn't fired in the crime no way to tell.

If a gun is stolen...well it's stolen.

My educated guess is most guns used in crimes are stolen.

I would also guess in states that require permits run serial numbers through NCIC.

I had my handgun long before I got my CCW "permit" and there was no req'mt to check/verify it's SN. If I buy a handgun from you, I have nothing but your word it isn't stolen or previously fired illegaly by you or someone else from whom you may have acquired it from.

I guess that's why buyer should insist on a copy of sellers drivers license or at least see the license to verify sellers name, and/or signed bill of sale with name match to the license. Seller should have same info from buyer and verified name. Hopefully, for the seller, they have the historical record for their own purchase records.

If the seller won't disclose...I personally would walk away kicking myself all the way. I've had my identity stolen once, and I think that was easier than trying to explain to local cops or feds having ownership control of an illegal firearm

IRS says keep their records for 7 yrs; I think firearms are forever.
