I came across a S&W 940 at what seemed like a very good price. I'm starting to worry I got burned. I inspected the gun and it appeared to be in over all good shape. I opened and closed the cylinder a number of times and didn't notice any real issue.

A while late I went to open the cylinder and it was difficult to open. It seems that every now and again it takes more force than ought to be needed to open it.

I know a lot less about revolvers than other platforms.

Any ideas as to what the issue is and what I am looking at to fix it?

Check and see if your ejector rod is loose. If they back out they can hang up. Hold the cylinder so it won't move and try to turn the ejector rod, if it's loose tighten it down good and snug. IIRC it turns counter clockwise to tighten. I had this happen on my 360J.

If that isn't it check the barrel/cylinder gap, if they're rubbing it could make it feel like it's hanging up.

That appears to have been the problem. It is opening fine now. Thank you very much!. I'm feeling good about having paid $450 for it again.

My pleasure. Of course, at $450 you'd still be ahead even if it required a trip to the gunsmith, that's a great price for a 940 these days!

Had that happen to me once. You got that 940 for a darn good price, well done.
