For several years, Henry has been building a variety of rifles and carbines chambered for revolver cartridges. But now they offer two 100% made in USA carbines for the 30-30 rifle cartridge.

I've not handled one yet. But the blued model reminds me of Marlin's 336.

They sort of look a little like 1881 Marlins only with side ejection.

Thing is, if you close your eyes and hold it, it will remind you of a Garand.

Mossberg's entry looks interesting, though.

At 8.3 lbs., MSRP $749 or $969, I don't much care how it loads. (Nor am I sure what they're smoking in Brooklyn these days.)

The new Mossberg 464 is also US-made, and at 6.7 lbs., with a $473 MSRP, it might just be a good little hunting carbine.

Or maybe I'll just stick with Marlins... :) I like both straight and pistol grips, though, so it's hard to decide...

I will be looking to get my hands on a Mossberg when they appear on the shelf, to see how I really like it.

There's no loading gate. That's what he was saying. It feeds near the muzzle. Personally, I don't mind that. It has its advantages, like easy unloading. And I don't need to "shoot one, load one" quickly if I have 6 rounds in a hunting rifle. It's not a plugged bird shotgun or something.

It's the price and weight I don't care for.

yep

too much $$$ an too heavy.

The Mossy looks pretty good though! I hope they chamber it in 308 Marlin though - that's the cartridge that makes these viable elk guns.

I'm with El Tejon. I like a 30/30 I can load through a gate so I can shoot 1 and load 1.
I used to load up spire point bullets in 3030 cases for mine and run 1 in the chamber and 1 in the magazine for hunting. It was fun to play with the 30/30 that way. I don't care for tube loaders.

The price and weight also bug me.

The Mossberg looks pretty neato though. Good price and a loading gate.

Of course, if you want to get really scoutish, then Browning's box mag lever gun will do you really well.

That's kind of a moot point with LE rounds, though. The tube feed allows you to load them without scraping them past the spring-loaded loading gate door.

6 of one, half-dozen of the other to me, but if I carry a lever gun, it's because I DON'T want to lug around a heavy rifle.

Same here. It's not so bad if you live in some godless flat clime, but I'm a mountain guy. The ups and down will have you throwing rocks at heavy rifles. The 30/30 was a godsend for me, being light and stubby.

I have to say that I like the looks of the brass model. I've never owned one in brass though...

I don't much care for the squared forearm with barrel band. I prefer a single barrel band and blued nosecap. To my eyeballs, its a more finished appearance.

When Winchester 94 hits the stores again, it will find fresh competition from Mossberg and Henry. Marlin, NEF, and Thompson continue to offer 30-30 carbines. Buyers never had so many choices for 30-30 firearms!
