Henry vs Rossi cycling heavy .45 Colt

I recently purchased a Henry X model in 45 colt. It has 1-16" twist which should be good for heavier bullets. I have not purchased any 335 grain bullets for it yet, but I have made up a dummy round with a 250 rnfp seated to a COL of 1.690" and it cycled fine. I think the action on these guns is similar to the big boy steel actions, but I can't confirm this for sure. As soon as I get my hands on some 335's or 340's I'll post back how they cycled and grouped.

Really only interested in 300 grain XTP's. I don't care to bother with lead, don't see what it would give me for hunting while the XTP's I know will expand and penetrate.

TTv2, gotcha. I was just letting you know the newer style action, X model and possibly big boy steel and case hardened steel, can handle longer heavier bullets and have the 1-16" twist to stabilize them. As for the 300xtp's, if your wanting already loaded Precision One sells 50 for $42 plus shipping. I bought some just for the brass, Starline, and to break in gun. Very accurate in my gun. They list 1210fps, from a revolver I'm guessing, but mine averaged 1333fps from a 17.5" barrel. I saved 15 for light skinned game like deer, but I can't wait to try some heavier WFN-GC.

Look forward to your findings. If they work with heaven WFC-GC, I'll pick one up.

I have a Henry Big Boy Case Hardened in 45 Colt, sweet rifle. I shoot only cast as I cast my own. It cycles and shoots the Lee 230 grain round nose perfectly and the 315 grain Lee WFN perfect. It has issues with the 200 grain SWC. Have not tried any jacketed in it yet.

Good to know they can handle longer OAL ammo. Now if they can handle 30k PSI Ruger Only .45 Colt pressures is the question that few seem to have the answer to.

Finally got hands on some heavier bullets. 335 WFN-GC from Montana Bullet works. Sized .452, actual weight 343 grains. I tested loads starting at 21 grains of H110 up to 23 grains, in half grain increments. Got my best groups at 22g and 22.5g, with the edge going to 22.5g if you throw out the flier. Shot at 30yds, max I could do that day. 20200808_105019.jpg Average velocity for 22g was 1445fps with extreme spread 15fps. Average velocity for 22.5g was 1476fps with ES 26fps. That comes out to 1590ftlb and 1659ftbl respectively. I'm guessing those qualify as "ruger only" loads. I was tempted to go higher as I wasn't seeing any pressure signs, no flattened primers, fired cases easily went back into chamber. But I'm satisfied with the accuracy and will stick with the 22.5g load. This load is just meant to be a woods defense round and as such should be limited to 50yds or less.
Cartridges are loaded to an overall length of 1.6645", which still let's me use the cannulure groove. 20200809_101050.jpg 20200809_104433.jpg 20200809_104358.jpg If I put them much passed 1.670" the edge of the wide (.370") meplat would sometimes catch the edge of the chamber and require opening the lever fully again before it would chamber. But pushing it in to 1.6645" took care of that. I cycled 25 rounds through it without a problem. I think it would be fine with the slightly longer LFNGC as the meplat is smaller and the nose has more taper. 20200809_175814.jpg I know optics like red dots are heresy on lever guns, but I built this with function over form in mind.
