Hey yall. Since a friend of mine got a Heritage Rough Rider, I have been thinking of following suit. He's let me handle and shoot the thing quite a bit, and I believe it is a quality made handgun. He has the 6 1/2" model, and I think I favor the 4.75" a little more, simply because it seems to be handier. Do any of yall have any experience with them? In handling and firing my friend's Rough Rider, there have been no malfunctions, or misfires. It has been a solid performer, and quite accurate also for fixed sights. I am looking for something that will not break my wallet for ammo, and something fun to take out on weekend and afternoons to mess around with.

My buddy and I went out and put another couple hundred through his and his dad's Rough Riders, and both functioned perfectly. I also gotta say they are pretty accurate for fixed sights. I'm just trying to figure out if I want the 4.75" Model or the 6 1/2" Model....the 6 1/2" was a bit more accurate, but for the purpose of the gun the 4 3/4" is a little more practical. I just want some to have fun and plink with but also be able to use in an emercy situation, such as dispatch a snake, dog, etc. you get the point. And I love the fact of having 2 guns in one with the combo 22 Mag cylinder. My buddy has put quite a few magnums without a problem in his, probably a couple hundred. And he's put probably close to a thousand .22LR's through. I believe they are solid, reliable handguns, from being able to shoot and handle them.
Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

I would not count on a .22 or .22 mag from the rough rider to do the trick on an aggressive animal. The only example I have handled was rough but functional, and if you want to ease yourself into shooting with an inexpensive plinker it may service you well.

http://www.budsgunshop.com/ has the 5.5" model for a low price right now. For that price I would give it a shot and hope for the best. The Ruger Single Six is a better gun but at three times the price.

Well, I wouldnt really consider getting one, if it wasnt for the factof being able to put several hundred rounds through my buddy's and his dad's RR. I shot and handled both Rough Rider, and both functioned flawlessy. Both were pretty accurate out to 10-20 yards. I know Ruger is paired with quality, but I think all venue's need to be checked. Just because something is inexpensive, doesnt necessarily mean it is cheap, or of any less value than the other. One thing I learned in philosophy....we all make value judgements on everything. I will say that after handling both RR's, that they seem extremely well built.

Big D, the shop where I work has sold quite a few Rough Riders. I don't know of any that have had to come back to see the gunsmith. The price difference is in craftsmanship. The Rugers are slicker, have a nice blued finish, nice wood grips, and use a transfer bar. As you've seen, the RR isn't as slick, has a basic black finish, servicable but not fancy grips, and uses a cam block safety to stop the hammer from contacting the firing pin. Yet underneath the RR is a still a well made and serviceable gun.

I have a 45 Colt Heritage Rough Rider 7 1/2" and enjoy shooting it. Good gun for the money. I don't like the safety plate firing pin assembly though. Rather have a more traditional firing and it is a pain to take apart for cleaning. Was considering loading some cartridges with black powder but ruled it out because of more frequent cleaning. Loaded some Barnes XPB bullets and they appear to be able to slow down a charging brown bear. ;-) In my opinion, a 22 is good for plinking, rats at the dump, or squirrel size game hunting, but that is about it. Ed.

Big D, I'm thinking of getting the Heritage R/R with the 3.75" barrel and cocobolo bird's beak grip. From what I can tell, it's roughly 1/2 the price of the slightly longer Ruger NR4.

For a .22LR/.22WMR combo, it appears to be a very good revolver, not as nice as the Ruger, but fully functional and well made.

In my case, the difference between them with tax is $175 and that's about 2/3's the cost of another decent serviceable small gun such as a Kel-Tec, Bersa, etc. or a whole lot of ammunition to "plink" with.

Good luck with your decision.

In shootin my friend's RR and his fathers, I had no problem. I had a blast shooting them, and could easily see myself spending a whole day plinking away with it....its just that much fun.

I have a Heritage 3 in. (Or 3-1/2 in. I can't remember) Birds head grip blued model.
It functions great, is very accurate, and was low in price.

What more could you want.

Rodger

I looked at a Heritage many years ago when they first hit the scene.
They were featured in a gun rag article along with Rexio revolvers

What I found was reminiscent of an RG
Both lines were absolute crap

About a week ago a friend took me to the same store because he was looking for a .22
What I found was a gun at least as good in quality as an H&R and probably better with a very nice blue finish and no ugly green wood grips or bar-b-que paint

He paid $179 for a 6.5 inch convertible and is very happy

I haven't shot it yet but he has sent about half a bulk pack down range with no malfs

The shop only had two a 4.5" and the 6.5" if they had had two of the longer barrels I would have bought one that day, but I didn't want to weasel under him on his first purchase

i got the birds head grip also (pearl) , both cylinders and the box for $75.00 at a shop.

they traded for it and didn't realize the ejector rod was missing the finger part. It is $5.00 plus shipping from heritage. I just havent gotten around to ordering it yet. and i've taken it to the range three times without flaw.
