he is looking at buying a 1911 pistol. he prefers a 4" barrel, and as most youngsta's, is on a tight budget. he is looking to spend no more than 500-550.

so what i would like to do is create a poll to get an idea of what is better, and what to steer away from, but the only names i can think of that fits the criteria is rock island and amc.

id like to hear the names of the other companies i can put in my poll thread.

thx fellas, bryan.

Here's a list of some under 600 for ya

RIA
Armscore
Taurus
American Classic
Citadel
Para GI
Auto-Ordnance
STI

As far as a 4" barrel, not sure if some of these companies offer 4" models under 600

Why 4"? If it's for CCW, it's the grip length that's usually a problem. If he could settle for 5", it might open up more options?

Don't forget used.

It's really expensive to buy a 1911 (cheap or not), and fix it up later. It might be cheaper, in the long run, to wait and save? So he can get the one with the features he wants.

For $600 through Davidson's you can get a Springfield Mil Spec that comes with a hi-viz front sight (not the tiny, hard to see military sights), extra set of grips, lowered ejection port, and a holster.

1911s are fun shooters and they need a lot trigger time to become proficient with, as with any other pistol. For a first time user, I'd recommend the reliability of the full size Government frame. :)

From what I've heard the RIA 1911s are actually pretty darned good, and can be had quite cheaply. Actually there's an article in the current American Handgunner talking about inexpensive 1911s, might be worth a read.

I do love my Taurus, but a new one might be slightly over budget. Damn fine weapon though.

thats a tight budget for a 1911...i guess if it were me id be looking a Springfield Armory

I know you are looking for as many options as possible. I don't have more than one to offer and that is Rock Island Armory. They do make an Officer's size unit. They are as reliable as anything out there and they shoot straight. The fit and finish is 'military grade'. So nothing fancy. But they are work horses and accurate.

Don't forget about Norinco which can be had for $400-$500 and are damn accurate and reliable.

wound up not doing a poll after all, and bought an american classic commander.

working on a breif review thread with pics right now.

thx guys for all your input.

For $550 or less I'd look at either a new RIA or a good used Para GI Expert (I'd lean towards the Para if you can find a good used one) as it's a more rugged frame (as a reference, the guys who make the .460 Rowland conversions list Para GI Expert as acceptable and say 'no' to RIA).

Check out this link. I think if I understand you correctly this is what you want for the price you want to pay.
