I need to know if my Hi-Stan is supposed to expel the spent cartridges automatically or not. I am having a problem with cartridges ejecting.

You have to open the cylinder, push the ejector rod and often tip the gun to help the spent casing fall out. Occasionally you need to pull one out past the ejector star. You may have to push the star back into the cylinder on early guns as they had no spring.

You mean by gravity? Probably not. Hold the thing upside down and hit the ejector a couple times and then pick them out if necessary.
