What she buy, the gx4 is on par with any of the micro 9's. Last 10,000 rounds, who knows but goes bang everytime i need it. Don't recall trigger or drop issues.

Older Hi Point 380s & 9mms are very slightly different than newer ones. The newer configuration has a spring inside of a spring for the striker spring. The old configuration did not. I liked the old configuration better. In the newer gun, the two springs would get “tangled” up with each other during both compression and in decompression. Racking the gun was much less smooth and it was more prone to jams. I converted the new gun to the old configuration and the operation drastically improved.

I still have the "improved" newer gun. It is now very reliable (a stove pipe every once in a blue moon) and it shoots better than most of the bottom feeders that I shoot. For my needs, the extra weight and reduced capacity are not problems.

As I prefer metal pistols with a hammer, I would go with the Taurus PT 92. Very solid pistol with a long reputation for being a reliable option. I can't comment on other 9mm options from them.
So, depends some on which Taurus is on the option list.

By all accounts I have seen, modern versions of both are reliable shooters most of the time.

The hi point is big and ugly, but that has its own beauty to some.

I have owned 3 assorted Taurus autos all three went back to the factory all three were never reliable. I have owned 3 hi-points I never had a single failure to fire . As far as getting over Taurus autos from the past . I have a friend that is a police officer. We had a mass shooter locally 5-6 years ago he responded to the incident and was there when they ended it while bad guy was trying to clear his Taurus G3

I almost voted hungry Doberman for HD but it wasn't on the list.

I ended up voting Taurus because my only experience with a Hipoint was years ago and it was bad. Three failures to feed in only 8 rounds! (I'm told this is rare)... It wasn't my gun but that very brief experience left a very lasting negative impression on me... so yeah, I voted Taurus. Doberman as backup.

As with any firearm, test the you-know-what out of it before you trust it.

A coil spring inside another coil spring should have each spring coiled the opposite direction from the other to prevent that issue. I have pistols with dual recoil springs set up exactly that way from the factory.

I wanted to. Do you want me to run all my ideas for discussions by you before I post them going forward?
Making fun of what people buy is crude. At least they exercised their rights and enjoy our sport. Wasn't funny at all comparing Taurus to high point.
But your usually entertaining to read.
Both companies are solid and sell plenty to stay in business. Not everyone can justify the cost of more expensive firearms.
I kept a highpoint carbine in my winter tractor and a highpoint 9mm handgun in the feed truck and was well armed.
I've had Taurus from time to time and had a Jimenez before the concealed carry took off.
Always went pop and bullets came out. Night shift down town when it was rare for someone to carry in their boot.
Pay grade changes have totally changed what I keep around but back then I was not at a disadvantage.
They will enjoy the purchase.

I don’t think I’ve shot a High Point, but I’ve handled them enough to know I don’t want one.

I’m not the biggest Taurus fan but I’d take one over a High Point.

I don’t own either.

I currently own;
Taurus:
PT1911AR
PT145
TCP738
Gx4
TX-22C
Previously owned;
Taurus:
G2C
Hi Point:
JHP45

ALL of these pistols functioned flawlessly.
I will agree High Points are heavy, and a poor choice for carry for that reason, plus the safety is a poor design, particularly for carry.

Has Taurus had problems in the past, both with production issues and customer service? Yes. SO HAS EVERY OTHER MAJOR MANUFACTURER. Have they learned from that and improved? YES.

I like Nighthawks and such as much as the next guy, but is a gun of that price point necessary for a reliable defense gun? Of course not. Am I going to denigrate someone for choosing one? Certainly not. Nor will I denigrate someone for choosing a Taurus. I will continue to point out why a Hi Point is not a good choice for carry, but I will say from personal experience, as well as having seen others fire theirs, they are very reliable and accurate.

Gun snobbery is not very High Road.

The inner spring is full length. The outer spring is wound the opposite direction and is only partial length. The inner spring tends to buckle as it is compressed and this is what causes the interaction.

Don't know if is still law in IL but HiPoint pistols didn't meet the melting point threshold so it gave us an easy out for not offering them. Boss wouldn't have anyway. Had lots of folks from nearby asking for them, however.
I had the 9mm carbine for a few weeks. So ugly I was ashamed to take it to the club. The aftermarket magazine was just as ugly.

This afternoon my wife told me that my grandson bought my daughter a handgun for Christmas.

ETA The gun has already been purchased. I will not be suggesting any gun to DD

She also told me that I need to keep my mouth shut and stay out of it.

I know the sale was legal because my daughter decided as long as she was filling out a 4473 she might as well get herself a .22 Rifle to murder rabbits on the Goat Ranch. Apparently, the rabbits are eating the chicken feed.

As I said DW told me I am to offer no opinions Period. So I asked her "Oh my God what did she do get a Taurus?"

DW said "Worse, it was a High Point."

To which I replied "High Points aren't worse. They're ugly as hell but they will shoot every time you pull the trigger."

Regardless of my opinion this was a gift from a son to his mother. I'm not getting in that. I don't care if he bought her a Jimenez. Actually I think I might say something if it was a Jimenez.

So that's the poll which would you pick Taurus or High Point? Both 9 mm

ETA DD works in a school that has campuses in 4 states. Her job involves lots of flying so I'm fairly certain she's not going to bother to get her permit. The gun will be strictly for home defense at the Goat Ranch
"Depends exactly which Taurus" Anything current, probably OK.

I have no experience with Hi_Pointe.

Make sure to show your DW the polling results, and that THR agrees with her. Your DW apparently has better taste in guns than you do, and you have better taste in picking a significant other. :) <ikid>

I have a Hi-Point C9 and 2 Taurus Revolvers a 605 357mag and 415 41mag.

I have no plans of parting with any of them.
For a range gun it wouldn't matter which manufacturer. For a Defense Gun a poly Taurus....

My G3C and GX4 have been flawless. 2-3K through each. My son's GX4 has more rounds through it than mine and has the same experience. Probably the only 3 good ones Taurus has made!

You are now inkerrect, sir! My Gx4 had been flawless, as is my TX-22C, as was my G2c.
