How long have the High Standard 1911's been in production, and are they well thought of?

If you are looking at the GI model. It is made by Armscor. It is the same as the Rock island 1911s but a few $$ more. RIA's are good entry level 1911's if you want to tinker with a 1911 it a good way to go. They are also good shooters. If all you are looking for a 1911 without all of the bells and whistles.

You won't have to tinker with an RIA (or clone) unless you want to. They're generally good out of the box, once you get a few rounds through them. I'd comment on mine, but I bought it used. It does function 100% though.

They're good, functional guns with potential for customization. I'm in the process of putting a beavertail on mine.

That what I meant.
Good guns out of the box, both of mine needed a fluff and buff that's about it.
But if you want to try your hand at working on 1911's I would rather make my mistakes on a $350 gun. :)

I actually saw one of the RIA 1911s NIB for $300 less than a year ago, I've regretted not putting it on the credit card right then and there since. Considering the prices on gunsamerica and such, I wish I had even more.

HiStandard

Thanks for the views on this subject. I think I will head over to Gander after work. I called this a.m., and of the three they had, one remains. Hopefully will get to the range tonite. Really not sure why, I have two colts (70 & 80) I guess it's the price ($379) The only turn-off is on the underside of the frame, in bold script, is the legend, "made in the Philippines"

I have shot the high standard, and as everyone else has said, it is a functional, basic piece. My only complaint is the crappy sights, but that complaint is inherent to any 1911 striving to be GI accurate, and is not a commentary on the High Standard in particular.

As an aside, I personally won't be buying one because for about $75-100 more, I just put a Taurus 1911 on layaway at Sportsmans Warehouse.
