I have a J.C. Higgins Model 88 revolver, based on the earliest versions of the High Standard Sentinel, probably a R-101 or R-102 (dated about 1955 or 1956).

In 1961 the R-102 added a return spring to the ejector rod, which my Model 88 does not have.

I also have a High Standard Sentinel Deluxe Model R-106 (made in 1962) which does have the return spring.

Does anyone have any practical suggestions of how I might retro-fit my Model 88 to have an ejector return spring like my Deluxe Model R-106 ?

Thanks.

I can't help with your question, but I will say you've got a couple of fine revolvers. I've owned a couple of them in the past, but always got talked out of them by someone who "wanted it for my daughter."

I always thought they were about the perfect "walking around" gun. In an Uncle Mikes Sidekick holster, they were light as a feather carrying. Add a pouch of 22 LR's and I was set for the day.

Good luck with your search.

IIRC, a looooong time ago, I seem to remember I read that they are already machined for the spring, you just have to disassemble the cylinder and install one. If Numrich Gun Parts doesn't have them, you may want to take the one out of the Deluxe and match it up at the hardware store.

If I'm NOT RC, then Numrich may have the appropriate retrofit parts such as a cylinder, crane, and ejector- but the cost may be prohibitive.

As a last resort, a good machine shop may be able to turn down the ejector rod so that a spring will fit it.

I know its a pain, but if you post pictures of both disassembled cylinders, we may be able better judge if this project is doable.......

Either way, those are nice revolvers, good luck Bro!

my Father mail ordered a r101 back in 1962, I carried that pistol in the California mountians as a 12 yr old trout fishing ,try that now. Dad carried a 45 ,I remember one encounter on a gravel road along a mountain stream with about a dozen Hells Angels saying they wanted our stuff , Dad pulled out the .45 and said come and get it they laughed and said there are 12 of us and you only got 9 shots. My Dad said it will mean something to 9 of you.I then pulled that 22 out and they got back on bikes and rode off. That R101 was traded to an Uncle for a ruger mark II .My Uncle just passed and it came back to me ,its one that's a keeper because of the memories.

I cracked up when I read this, because strangely enough, my daughter fell in love with this gun. It's
the only pistol she shoots regularly.

AFAICT, there haven't been many upgrades or improvements in
this revolver type, in all these decades, either. They simply are a
very nice little gun.
Have you contacted Wolff Spring Co?

Wolff Spring Co. has helped me a great deal in the past. They are still a valued source for spring problems.
Right now I am trying to decide how to connect the return spring to the ejector rod (or where ever) .

Thank you all for all of the suggestions/comments/potential solutions and well wishes.
We will all continue in this search for an answer.:)

Wow ! Thanks for that entertaining entry.
Boy, I bet your Dad was thankful for your presence and stance on that day !
Just like he taught you.
Uhm! Uhm! Uhm!

But getting back to the HG, 9 .22 LR (hollow points?) are to be reckoned with !

I really need to gather up a bunch of different 22 loads and go to the range. Like most 22s the r101 is particular about brands. I remember groups from a few inches to pie pan size at 30 ft. with different ammo.

I've bought a 6" Sears 88 dated to the mid '50's maybe 5 years ago. I found a 3" barrel and birds head grip for it on ebay and bought it. The guns used to sell as a kit (some versions) including the second barrel and grip. Grips for the 88 are unique to it and won't fit the Sentinel. These guns are surprisingly accurate.

View attachment 813453 I can’t help with the OP’s issue, but wanted to share my High Standard Double Nine W-106. Steel frame with a regular 22 cylinder and a 22 magnum cylinder. Great shooting, fun pistol.

I have a High Standard Double Nine in .22 LR only. I like it, and like your gun.
You're right. It doesn't connect to this thread.
